I walk down my hall leading towards the top penthouse that belongs to me. Keys in hand I rub my eyes letting out a yawn. Only stopping when I see my mom leaned up against the wall. Her back pressed against it with her head leaned back. She's wearing joggers and a t-shirt with some Uggs and I can tell just by that she hopped out of bed and caught the first flight the could.
"Mom," I call out getting her attention. "What're you....what are you doing here?" Inside I already know the answer. It's the news..she had to have seen the news.
It's written on her face as her brown bunny like eyes are filled with disappointment. She moves her grey silk pressed curls out of her face. "Keshay." Was all she said.
I shake my head speeding up my walking until I'm standing in front of the door frantically unlocking it. "It was nothing. I'm his lawyer, that's why he needed me there." I lie avoiding her gaze. Once the door is open we both step inside and close it behind us.
"Do you think I'm stupid Keshay? Only reason a lawyer would need to be present is if a NDA had to be signed and obviously one wasn't because someone leaked that information." I continue to avoid her as I drop my keys on the counter.
"Well there was a NDA so I don't know who told." I mutter. I take off my shoes and just as I'm about to walk towards my bedroom she calls out after me.
"You're sleeping with him aren't you."
I can't bring myself to turn around fearing she'd see right through me. "He's married mom. The Senator is married to Emma. Of course I'm not sleeping with him-"
"Your father denied it too," she whispers. "But I knew better. I asked myself why would a woman fly so far with her client to visit his biological parents? Why wouldn't he ask his wife? Why wouldn't he ask Emma?" She repeated. "Because you two are sleeping together."
Her words hang in the air and I finally force myself to look in her direction seeing the way shock forms on her face. She places her hand over her heart her eyes watering and for the first time in my life I'm seeing my mother look at me with anything but pride. "You really- you and the senator have been-" she cuts herself off shaking her head blinking away the tears. "How could you be so stupid? How could you do something so idiotic Keshay?"
"You don't understand." I find myself trying to explain. "We were friends at first, I'd helped him with a case. He trusted me mom, that's why he brought me because I understand him. He knows nothing about himself or his culture. I helped him find himself and we-"
"Don't you dare say y'all love eachother," it's as if she's reading my mind. "You shouldn't even allow yourself to love another woman's husband."
