"O"Once again I'm seated on the other end of glass with a phone pressed up against my ear. But the atmosphere is different. Everything is different. And though I owe him my life and all the sympathy in the world I can't help but let the words leave my lips. "I told you Pop," I say aloud. "I told you she wasn't herself. I told you we should've done something-"
"You gone really come in here, stand before me, and say you told me so when MY mom just died?" He questions his voice cold and deadly.
I sigh deeply. "She was like a momma to me too Poppa. You know that shit-"
"And she made her choice, as much as that shit breaks my heart." He motions to his chest while his tired eyes look into mine. "That was the choice she made."
"I know but," I pause briefly. "To lose your mom like that...I just-"
"How is it any different than when you lost yours-"
"The difference is my mom was raped and drugged-"
"And mine CHOSE not to be apart of my life," he reminds me. "From the moment I made that decision to say I did that shit she's never loved me the same. She hasn't visited me in years, didn't even answer when I'd call most of the time, never wrote back." He shakes his head. "My mother left this Earth hating me. And that's some shit I have to live with. Not you, not Miro, ME. At least y'all had years with her. I didn't."
His words cause intense guilt to consume me. "I don't believe that." I shake my head. "I don't believe she hated you before she...I don't think so, if anything she hated me. She knew I did that shit. I didn't know it at the time but she knew, and my weird ass baby momma kept that shit from me."
"Your wife." He corrects.
"What?" I ask in confusion and a hard tone.
"Your wife." He repeats. "Y'all share a coven, y'all were married under the Lord himself. She's your wife, do not disrespect her in my presence."
I wave him off not wanting to hear it. "I can't keep forgiving the shit she does I just can't. First she cheats, then she leaves me, then she hides from me some very important information. She hid from me that Ruby told her she thinks I did it. My auntie said that to her weeks before she killed herself-"
He slams his hand down roughly catching the attention of others and also catching me off guard. "That doesn't matter. Okay? None of it matters. She's gone O, she's not coming back. It doesn't matter what she thought, what she said, or what she did. Because nothing can prevent what has already happened."
I smack my lips. "I'm not forgiving that shit-"
"You're going to. You have to." His words catch me off guard and I stare at him in confusion as he leans forward speaking into the phone loud enough for me to hear clearly. "A vision came to me...through the night God sent me a vision. The night before I found out my mother had passed. In the vision it was flames, flames blazing down the entire gated community, every Oliah home within miles burned. The smell of flesh burning, smoke in the air, I could feel it even as I woke up my throat dry and taste of debris. I was walking down the road trying to find homes I could go into, family I could save, I could hear all of our family screaming from the insides. Begging for help, to find salvation in their final moments. I foreseen it Omri, I seen you locked inside a cage like an animal, the cage nailed to the ground, I couldn't make out the face of the woman inside your home but I could see her figure. Her pregnant dark figure stuck inside the house, flames surrounding her while she scream-"
