I made him a promise

The next day, Amy & Ty hugged Marty, and said heartfelt good byes!!   She pushed Ty's wheelchair to the elevator & then down to the hospitals front door.
Jack drove up in Lou's SUV & everyone helped Ty get situated in the back seat.

Amy and Jack stood back as Marty leaned in the car & softly spoke to Ty.......

You remember what I told you??

I'm not sure. Ty replied with an awkward grin.

Ty, if you love Amy, you need to tell her.
She needs to hear it from you!!
All that Amy did for you in staying over a week with you here....... That's rare to see in a girl Amy's age.  You take care Ty, and you take care of Amy!!
Don't be a stranger, call me with any questions about your meds!!  And call & let me know how you & Amy are!!  That's an order!!

Marty looked at Ty for a long second, like when a mom looks at her son as he leaves for war.
She grew attached to Amy & Ty & saw the powerful love they shared.  It was already strong enough to last a lifetime.

Good bye Ty, you take care, and you be careful with Amy........you know what I'm talking about!!

I do??   Ty asked.

Marty smiled and said;  there will soon come a night when that pillow needs to go.
You be certain you have protection.  Amy's too young for you to get her pregnant!!
We see many young girls here with unwanted pregnancies, and sometimes life throws us curve balls, and having a baby at such a young age is overwhelming.  I want the best for you and Amy; cherish her Ty.

Ty blushed and wondered how Marty knew they were sleeping together, with a pillow as protection.
He softly replied........We're not doing anything until Amy says she's ready.  And we will use protection.  I would never hurt Amy!!
I give you my word!! 
And thank-you.......for everything.

I gotta go!!   Marty wanted to say more, like always tell Amy good by when you leave for the day.   But she had already said too much, to a young man who reminded her so much of her son.

Ty leaned over & lightly kissed Marty's cheek.
He wanted to say 'thank you for taking care of me'.......but his male emotions froze up.
Ty saw the tears forming in Marty's eyes.
She hugged him again.

Marty understood every word he couldn't say and smiled at Ty then closed the door.

Jack slipped into the drivers seat and Amy hugged Marty one more time.  She had been
like a mom to both of them.

Marty turned and walked quickly back into the hospital.  This was the 3rd time she had cried this morning.  She looked up at the tall flag pole and saw the Maple Leaf silently waving at her.
She stopped and stared at it, and more memories flooded her mind.  🇨🇦

It had been a long time since she had a patient like Ty.  A powerful young man who was going somewhere in this life, and had a girl all picked out for the journey.  Marty said a quick prayer for them, she knew lots of obstacles would try to derail Amy & Ty in the months and years ahead.

Marty pushed the up button at the elevator and pulled her phone out & stared at her home page.

He stood tall behind all the apps, looking at her.
His easy smile brought her a smile, and, more tears to her eyes.  The Maple Leaf on his shoulder spoke volumes to who this young man was.  A warrior, but kind and thoughtful. He had a girl all picked out too.  His uniform was ironed, not a speck of lint anywhere. His shoes reflected the integrity in his heart.

The door opened and Marty quickly ran in and pressed 5 on the floor selector panel.  She sighed in relief as the doors closed.  She was all alone with her tears, and  a photo of her son for just seconds, as the elevator rose to the 5th Floor.  He looked so much like Ty.

Marty stared at him again....... Still handsome as hell in his Marine uniform.
Royal Canadian Marines were in his blood, since he was 8. 
Marty sighed and knew today was going to be hard.   It had been 5 years today since his status had been changed from: 'Active Duty Overseas'
to......... 'Missing In Action Overseas'.

Saying good bye to Ty and Amy was extra hard this morning. Marty hated good byes.  She hated the curve balls life threw.

She felt the elevator begin to slow; and dried her tears, then gathered her usual tough as nails composure about her.  Marty was head nurse of the 5th floor of Calgary General Hospital.
Her kind eyes spoke volumes to new & scared patients.  Her dedication and resolve breathed healing into them.

A vase of flowers was delivered to Marty's office this morning.  Her sister never forgot. 🌷

Just as Marty slipped her cell phone into her pocket she got a text.......
The elevator door opened and she stepped out & to the side & read.......

"Thank you for everything you did for me and Amy.  You're like a mother to us both!!
We miss you"!!
