Chapter Fifty Four

The next morning, Kate woke in Johnny's arms. It was early and she hadn't slept well. Deciding to get on with the day she climbed out of bed and donned her robe before heading downstairs into the kitchen. She boiled the kettle, and put the coffee machine on and waited in silence. Tapping her manicured nails on the worktop, she knew she wouldn't have much patience today. Eventually one cup of tea had been made and she sat at the kitchen table trying to relax, although she kept glancing at the door every 30 seconds or so. After an hour, she gave up relaxing and headed down to the cinema room and cleaned up the mess from the night prior, straightening blankets, cushions and clearing the residue of sweets and popcorn wrappers before she headed back to the kitchen. As she disposed the rubbish in the trash, she heard the front door go, she ran back into the foyer, and stopped flustered in front of the house guest. "Hilda!" She said shocked. "It's the weekend, what are you doing here?" "I'm sorry I didn't think anyone would be awake yet... I left my purse here yesterday and I'm off out with my family today. I'll just get it." The sweet housekeeper said heading into a nearby closet and retrieving what she needed. "Katie.. take a breath; all will be ok. You just need to relax." The older woman said and Kate just nodded before showing her out and closing the door. Rolling her eyes she headed back into the kitchen and decided to make some breakfast, for her self. A rarity when usually feeding three children. She decided that would distract her for a while. As she served up the eggs and toast, the front door went again and Kate reacted the exact same rushing into the foyer. A messy and tired looking Travis kicked off his boots and Sean dropped a load of paperwork on the console table. "Well?!?" Kate said rather loudly hoping she hadn't woken anyone.

"I followed him almost to the state border. He was about to cross into Vegas territory but we got him, he put up quite a fight until the cops arrived with Sean. They pulled him and they've booked him. He's banged to rights. He skipped bail, he drugged you and attempted to kidnap his own child. We also have the proof from the wire tap that he sold his child too. He'll be away for a very long time." Travis said and Kate let out a big sigh, she had been holding her breath expecting the worse. "And the money?" She said quietly. "We got it all back.. except for a little tip I gave to the good Sheriff." Sean said with a smile. "And you'll..." "I'll get it paid back into Johnny's accounts immediately." Sean said smiling. "Thank you." Kate said almost shaking, she smiled but tears threatened to fall. "It's our pleasure Kate.. excellent plan. If you weren't the boss' wife I'd fight for you to be on the force." Travis smirked and her tears really began to fall then. Sean nudged Travis who awkwardly hugged Kate. "Hey it's ok. It all worked out alright. No need for tears." The beefy security guard said. "I know I'm sorry." She said as her crying soaked Travis' jacket. "Hey! What's going on?" Kate heard Johnny say loudly. "Sir... this is not what it looks like." Travis joked as Kate pulled away from him. The men were chuckling but Johnny kept up the charade. "My wife is in a silk nightgown and robe in your arms Travis.. I'd say it looks like your hot date didn't go well at all. What did you do last night, you look roughed up?" "Oh umm just umm saw some mates after and we got on it. In fact I should probably go shower and get some rest." He wandered off alongside a sheepish Sean who headed into the annex. "What was that all about?" He asked his wife before she bit her lip. "You better come and sit down." Kate said pulling her husband into the kitchen. "Coffee?" She asked as Johnny sat at the kitchen table. "Kate.." "I can make you breakfast!" She said nervously and he repeated her name once more. Eventually she approached with a coffee and sat beside him. He took a sip. "I umm, I only did it for you. I couldn't bare the idea that you could have lost everything you hold sacred because of my terrible taste in men 10 years ago." Johnny's eyebrows furrowed. "I don't understand..." "You're just too wonderful to even know how wonderful you are and the thought of him ruining you, when you've tried so hard to get your life back on track in the last few years, was just too much to bare." "Kate... what did you do?" "I umm, I, well, umm, Ryan." "What about Ryan?" Johnny asked getting more and more concerned. "He's been arrested." "Arrested?" Johnny asked. "Yes. I mean I'm not proud of it, but hell I'm not ashamed, he deserved what he got, but I umm, I kinda set him up." "You set him up???" Johnny asked even more shocked. "How? When? I only let him go last night. You didn't even know where we were keeping him." Johnny said pushing his hair back from his face. "I worked with Sean and Travis." "What???" Johnny said concerned that his two most loyal security members had worked behind his back. "Kate.. I'm gonna need you to tell me the whole story doll.." she nodded biting her lip. "Johnny, I really am sorry, I would never usually hide anything from you, and I swear I won't ever again." "Kate...." Johnny said trying to stop her from rambling. Deep down he was impressed but just how did his sweet innocent little wife take on her abuser, and catch him at his own game?
