They were back at the hospital by 8 am, and in a room by 8:15. They had both gotten subs and had asked, Ryan and Maddy to be on standby for picking up Adeline.

"Alright, Sadie. We're gonna get you in the OR and we'll put you to sleep. You'll wake up good as new," the nurse smiled, giving Sadie a second to talk with her foster parents.

"We'll see you in a little bit. You're gonna be great," Chase told her, giving her a quick hug.

"Thanks," she smiled a little, already pretty tired out from the meds they already gave her to calm her down.

"We love you, honey," Kaycee told her, also hugging her tightly.

"Love you too,"

"Alright. Are we ready?" The nurse asked as she came back in.

"I guess," she mumbled, nodding as the bed started moving.

Chase and Kaycee stayed in the waiting room and waited as long as it took before their girl was out and back in recovery.

"Hey there. For Sadie right?" The doctor asked, coming over to them as they stood up.

"Yeah," Kaycee nodded.

"She's out. She's still sleeping but she did great. A little nervous when she got in there but she calmed down,"

"Okay good. Can we see her?" Chase asked.

"Yeah, this way," he nodded, taking them with him to where Sadie was sound asleep. Her leg was in a full cast and a little elevated to hopefully help the swelling. "She should wake up in a little bit but I don't know how long it'll last. It could take all day before the anesthesia is completely out of her system,"

"Okay," Kaycee nodded, both of them sitting down beside the bed.

They waited for a while before Sadie started to move around and wake up.

"Hey kiddo," Chase whispered, stopping her from moving too much or stabbing herself in the eye with the IV.

"I wanna go home,"

"I know,"

"I wanna go home," she mumbled again, clearly a little agitated. It was probably the medicine.

"I know Sadie. Just go back to sleep kiddo," Chase told her, moving her hand away from her eyes again.

"Daddy please," she whined again. There was that D word again.

"It's okay Sadie. We'll go home later," he promised again, as Kaycee came back into the room.

"Mommy,"

"It's okay baby. Go back to sleep," she whispered, moving the blanket slightly.

They waited a few minutes for Sadie to calm down and fall asleep again before sitting in the chairs in the room.

"She called me dad again," Chase whispered, looking at Kaycee.

"She did it at the school too," Kaycee shrugged, as if it was natural.

"Kayc why are you so calm about this?"

"Chase, she feels safe with us. Her mom left her alone when she was sick, sore, and struggling with school. All of that. We have been there for everything since she came to live with us. She just feels safe," she explained, knowing how much Sadie had gone through after that one breakdown the girl had had with her and Maddy. "She just feels loved and safe,"

"I do love her, she's a good kid. She acts like our kid,"

"She pretty much is until she goes back to her mom. Speaking of which, the court date is next week,"

"She going with us?" He asked, nodding toward Sadie.

"Yeah. She will have to go with us," she nodded, "Her mom will probably want to see her and if she's clean, they start reuniting them slowly. She won't just go straight back to her mom," She reassured him.

"As long as she's safe,"

"She will be, whether she's here with us or if her mom cleaned herself up,"

"Okay," He nodded, watching the girl as she slept off the anesthesia.

It took a while before Sadie was awake again and a little more alert this time.

"How you feeling?" Kaycee asked, sitting on the bed carefully by her good leg.

"I don't really feel it," She shrugged, sitting up as much as she could to see the elevated leg.

"That's good honey, no pain," Kaycee nodded, "We're thinking you'll go home tonight and just sleep on the couch in the living room? Or we can put a blow-up mattress in the dining room,"

"Can I sleep in my bed?" Sadie asked, looking between her foster parents.

"I think you'll be better off downstairs kiddo," Chase said as Kaycee looked at him for the answer. "It'll just be easier for you to get around,"

"Yeah. Sadie you're gonna have to use crutches and you won't be able to bend your knee. It'll be easier for you to stay downstairs. I'll stay down there with you if you want me to," Kaycee suggested, hoping Sadie would agree.

"Okay," She shrugged, "How long do I have to have this on?"

"A while. We don't have an exact timeline yet. But you'll start physical therapy in a few days and -"

"What about the court date?" She asked, cutting Kaycee off.

"You'll still be able to go to court with us and if your mom is granted custody again, we will give her everything," She explained, hoping to put her mind at ease.

"Do you think she will get custody back?"

"I don't know. It really depends on how she did in rehab and how she's doing with the reunification steps after,"

"So what's the point of going then? She doesn't care. She doesn't want me,"

"Sadie,"

"No. My mom does not want me and I'm sure she will say that. I don't think I want to even go," Sadie sighed.

"I think you need to be there, but no matter what happens, you will have time with us before you go back. Your mom will get visits, supervised and unsupervised and if she keeps up with those and stays clean, she could be a whole different person," Kaycee tried to tell her, hoping it would help the girl become a little more comfortable with seeing her mom.

"Can I just go back to sleep?"

"Yeah," She nodded, getting off the bed and tucking her back in while the girl tried not to think about her life-changing again.
