Within minutes of finding out that they actually did have the volleyball clinic that day, Kaycee and Sadie were in the car on their way to the school.
"I'm so excited for this year," Sadie grinned.
"Yeah?" Kaycee asked, only looking over at her for a second before looking back at the road.
"I'm excited to be an Elliott,"
"Not be Sadie, you are an Elliott," she grinned, "Have been since you came into our home,"
"Thanks, mama," she grinned from ear to ear. Everything was going to look different this year but it was for the better. She was no longer living her life in the shadows as her mother made the bad choices.
As soon as Kaycee pulled up to the school, they looked around and luckily no one had arrived yet. She unlocked the door and let Sadie inside, starting to get everything together. They got the net up and all of the volleyballs blown up before Maddy showed up ready to go.
"Hey guys," she called, coming into the gym before putting her keys and purse on the floor.
"Hey Maddy," Sadie called before bouncing one of the volleyballs on the ground to test it.
"You all ready?"
"Yep!" Sadie smiled, putting the ball into the hammock-like pit as Kaycee tossed her another one to test.
As the girls started to arrive, Maddy and Kaycee greeted each one and checked everyone in before they got started.
"Alright everyone circle up," Maddy called, sitting everyone in a circle so they could start the stretches.
"Today. We're gonna start training. This does not mean that just because you're here, you're on the team. You still have to go through tryouts and not all of you will make varsity. But being here and showing us that you want to work on the skills, works in your favor," Kaycee said as everyone started to stretch and get ready for the training.
"And it's not gonna be easy. That's for another sport," Maddy added, "What you show us here and how hard you work will make or break your tryout,"
"With that. Let's get going. 5 of you go with Maddy to work on serves, 5 of you come with me, and the rest of you, work on passes on the wall," Kaycee directed as she and Maddy moved to opposite sides of the gym.
Sadie started working on passing with the wall, trying her best to make everyone stick. Kaycee and Maddy worked with their groups before switching them around.
Sadie had no clue that some of the girls were willing to do absolutely anything to make varsity, even if they were lower on the totem pole.
The first day ended and all of the girls were in the locker room, changing back into their street clothes.
"Definitely know that Davis girl is going to make it. The coaches have a soft spot for her," Jaelyn said as she looked at Brittney.
"Well duh. She's the coach's kid. Well not exactly. They just treat her like it," Gabriella stated, loud enough for Sadie and Emily to hear over the lockers.
Emily and Sadie just shared a look, not wanting to engage but also wanting to at the same time.
"She's not even good," Jaelyn shrugged, looking between both Brittney and Gabriella.
"Whatever. She'll never make it. I'll make sure," Brittney smirked, thinking about what she could do to prevent Sadie from making the team.
"What are you gonna do?" Jaelyn asked.
"Don't know yet," Brittney shrugged as she looked at Gabriella.
"Don't worry about them," Emily told her, knowing that Sadie would let them infiltrate her thoughts.
"Trying not to," she nodded before they both walked out of the locker room and to the gym where Maddy and Kaycee were talking.
"I don't know. I don't think they're doing so hot," Maddy said, stopping as the 2 girls approached them.
"Who's not?" Sadie asked as she heard them stop.
"Not you," she shook her head, "Someone else,"
"There's talk about me in the locker room," Sadie sighed, looking at Maddy and Kaycee as they walked out of the gym.
"What do you mean?"
"They're saying they'll make sure I don't make it since I'm your kid," she shrugged, not caring to go into much more detail.
"Well, good thing they aren't the coaches," Kaycee said as she put her arm around Sadie. "You're good. Don't worry,"
"Thanks, mama,"
"Always kiddo,"
