Early next morning Barnes and I met in the workshop room where our equipment had been prepared. I stored some additional ammunition in one of the extra pockets on my new bulletproof vest. After the surprise attack during the last mission, there were a few adjustments made to our gear.

Barnes was fidgeting with a few knives. I took a look at some of the hand guns that were laid out on the table and tested how they felt in my hands. After putting one in my pocket, I caught Barnes staring at me.

„You're ready?", he covered his stare.

I nodded silently and we made our way to our car.

The drive was even longer this time. The signal tower was located in a disused industrial area way out of town.

While Barnes was driving I prepared the drone we had with us. Equipped with a thermal camera, we let it scan the area before entering it. As we couldn't find anything unusual, we left the car. Worried I looked around.

„What is it?", Barnes asked as he noticed my concerns.

„I don't know", I said still scanning my surroundings.

„Something feels off."

To my surprise he didn't dismiss my feeling.

„Better be careful then", he said as he put in his earpiece.

I followed his example and we started to make our way to the tower. Everything seemed abandoned, nature was slowly claiming the place back. But I wasn't too confident about that as the entrance to the station the last time also was overgrown by plants and yet we were attacked. The entrance to the building was all bricked up. There was no way we could enter the tower that way. The same applied for all windows on the lower levels of the building.

„We have two options", Barnes stated.

„We either find an entrance to the tunnels..."

I already didn't like where this was going. Besides the attack the last time we went down the tunnels, Tony had clearly instructed us not to enter them.

„Or we try the old fire escape", Barnes added, pointing to the remains of what once was a fire escape. The ladder was rusty and brittle. It didn't even reach the ground anymore. But it did lead to an already broken window which would allow us access to the tower.

Without wasting another thought on it, we went straight for the ladder.

Because it was high off the ground, Barnes – as he was taller than me – tried to get a hold of the lowest ladder rung but it immediately buckled under his weight.

„Shit!", he cursed.

He looked around, desperately searching for another plan.

„I'm gonna go alone", I said.
„You just need to lift me high enough so I can reach the upper part of the ladder."
