[trigger warning: violence, blood, death]
It only took Fury a couple of days to get a team ready for the next mission. Since this whole case still was a S.H.I.E.L.D. case, we let Fury pick out a handful of agents that would come with us as backup. Our plan was simple: Enter the warehouse through the tunnels of the old subway junction. Because the junction was huge and had once connected multiple subway lines, the station was spread over several levels and was built like a mall. In addition to the public corridors and shops, this meant a lot of hidden staff entrances and delivery routes. Although the junction was miles away from the warehouse, we were sure, these two buildings were connected.
Our research on their ammunition sadly didn't go as fast as we wanted it to go. We didn't have any results yet. But we knew we had to make a move quickly. Now that they knew we already had been in their warehouse, they would probably has altered their safety a lot. The longer we would wait, the harder it would be to get into the warehouse again.
It was still the very early hours of the day when we entered the premises. Everything was quiet. We walked into the building through the abandoned truck delivery route.
At this point we had already spent hours preparing and traveling here. I was untypically quiet and tense. Barnes gave me a few concerned looks and tried to talk to me, but I brushed him off every time. Once our cars had stopped at the premises and all the agents got ready, he stopped me one last time. As I wanted to walk away again, he grabbed my arm and forced me to stay. He pulled me in very close to keep his voice as low as possible.
"Talk to me", he said.
"There is nothing to talk about", I answered while trying to escape his grip.
"I know something is up", he said pulling me in even closer.
"I don't know what you're talking about."
I clenched my jaw. He knew I was lying. But I didn't care. I couldn't stand him being this close. Finally I fought my way out of his grip.
"We have a mission to do. Focus", I demanded and walked off, leaving him behind, still wondering.
The entrance was still very intact. Once hacked into the system, the lights flickered on without any problems. No dirt or garbage, no graffiti, nothing. It looked like this route was still active though it officially got shot down decades ago. They were still using this route. As per usual a drone flew in beforehand to check everything with its thermal camera and sent its live data to the glasses Barnes and I were wearing. The other agents blindly followed our lead.
