Chapter Nine
Shadow Play
┗━━━━━━━━━━┛

❝I must be more like myself.❞

IT WAS LIKE ANY REGULAR day for you in Megapolis. You excitedly skipped your way to the Shadow Theater to watch another play from your favorite performer, Macaque. You always felt excited whenever you would go there.

For some reason, Macaque was really someone extraordinary to you. He amused you a lot with his mysterious attitude.

Anyway, you bought a ticket and made your way to the theater. When you entered, you saw Mk and his group already sitting there and chatting which made you happy, "Oh, this will be so much fun!" You happily thought before walking toward them. You put on a smile as you reached the group, "Hello guys, I'm glad to see you all again." You greeted and that earned you their attention. They smiled at you, "Hey Y/N, long time no see. You missed so much." Mk said with a goofy smile on his face. You chuckled and sat beside Mei, "Yeah, I was kinda busy with family stuff." You stated, letting out a small laugh afterwards.

"Is it your first time here?" Tang asked, having to lean forward in order to see you. You shook your head, "No, I come here very often. You could say I'm a regular viewer." You replied as you put a hair lock behind your ear. Mei beamed and slightly leaned toward you, "Oooh, a regular viewer. That's unexpected, do you meet someone here?" She questioned while wiggling her eyebrows. You blushed deeply and turned your gaze away, "I-I like the stories here, there's nothing of what you think." You reasoned while trying your best not to sound nervous. You knew Macaque likes to keep his identity hidden when he starts his shadow play, so you can't tell her about him.

Mei continued to smile as if she doesn't believe you, but you decided not to talk about this anymore. You all continued to chat before Macaque appeared on the stage. The group were shivering while you had a big smile on your face, "It's starting!" You thought happily, looking forward to hear today's story. Macaque pulled out his lantern and proceeded to tell his story, "Welcome viewers to a shadow play the likes of which have never been seen! It follows the tragic tale of a legendary warrior, and how those who bring light into this world inevitability bring darkness to those they hold dear." Just as the shadow play could start, your phone started to ring. You pulled it out and saw that it was your mother, "I must answer this call." You thought before standing up. You then excused yourself and went to answer the call. You went to the main hall and pressed the answer button.

"Hello mum."

"Oh hello dear, where are you now?"

"I'm in the Shadow Theater, you need something?"

"Ah yes. If you could be a dear, I want you to buy some groceries for the special dinner tonight."

"Of course, I have some money on me."

"Great! I will text you the list. See you later."

"Okay, bye mum!"

You closed your phone and returned to the theater, but you found no one on the seats which puzzled you, "Weird, did they leave?" You mumbled before taking a seat back. That's when you noticed that Macaque was still on the stage which made you blush, "Still as mysterious as always." You thought with a small shy smile. Suddenly, you got startled when a pile of snacks dropped beside you, "Oh, hey Y/N. Have you seen the others?" Mk popped out of the pile and asked you, but he only earned a shook as a no from you. Before he could speak up, Macaque proceeded to finish the story.

"The Hero and the Warrior were like the Sun and the Moon. Their light, a protective glow, shining upon the world. Together, there was nothing that could stop the two of them. Either in the Celestial Realms or on Earth. As time went on, the Hero attained power beyond comprehension. As the Hero's light grew, so too did his shadow. And soon, the Warrior was cast in that shadow. In the darkness, the Warrior was forgotten by the Hero."

The two of you watched the play to the end and then left the theater. Mk had told you that he was going to look for his friends who left without telling him. You were sad that you didn't get to see Macaque, he oddly had left without talking to you like usual.

The next day, you went earlier to the theater to meet Macaque there. However, he still didn't make here just yet. Thus, you decided to sit in the main hall and wait for him.

"I wonder why he left early yesterday, I hope he is okay." You thought as you checked your phone for the time. It started to rain outside and you haven't brought an umbrella with you which means extra time here until the rain calms down. Suddenly, you heard banging in the stage room which was odd. You went to the door and placed your ear to listen and surely you could hear sounds of... fighting. You quickly slammed the door open to see Mk fighting against... his friends. However, they look kinda shadowy. You also noticed Macaque laughing while holding his magical lantern. You didn't understand what was happening, but you knew that Macaque was hurting Mk. Your eyes caught glimpses of Mei about to grab Mk. You quickly moved and pushed him out of the way, making Mei appear out of the wall and flip you over her shoulder.

She along with Pigsy and Tang pinned you down and prevented you to move, "Y/N!" Mk exclaimed and went to help you. You groaned and stopped him, "Don't worry, Mk. Just leave this place, it's dangerous." You said before your gaze went to Macaque. You could see that he had an apologetic look on his face... as if he didn't mean to let you see this. Mk frowned and looked at Macaque, his gaze shifting between gold and blue, "Enough!" Mk exclaimed in frustration. Before you know it, the kid pulled his staff and jumped toward Macaque. Your eyes widen in fear, "Mk, don't hurt him!" You yelled while trying to free yourself. Mk didn't listen and attacked the dark furred monkey, but he managed to stop Mk by holding his staff.

"You're right. That is enough. You know, you really are that bit too much like him. But good to see there's some potential."

Macaque broke the lantern, freeing your friends before he disappeared. You sat up and groaned in pain, your body hurt from being pinned down, "Guys! You're okay! Y/N, are you alright?" Mk uttered with a mix of relief and concern. You forced a smile and nodded, "Yeah, I will be fine." You assured him as he helped you standing up.

"What happened? Why is Y/N hurt? Wait, is that-..." Mei couldn't finish her sentence when you all heard the door close. You didn't pay attention to them, you just felt betrayed. Why did Macaque hurt your friends like that? Why didn't he stop them when he saw you getting hurt? His actions made question so many things and doubt your decisions, does Macaque really care about you?
