ASCYRIS JALIL PETERSON
October 12th, 2017
Chicago, IL

ASCYRIS sighed as he sat in the passenger seat of his mother's car as she fussed at him about the incident that had occurred not even an hour ago.

Black mamas lovee to rant, he thought to himself with a subtle roll of his eyes and a huff under his breath. Being sure his mother didn't hear him, he side eyed her, her eyes hadn't left the road ahead of her so he visibly relaxed.

"Are you even listening to me right now Jalil!" She yelled in disbelief as she looked over at her son for a split second. Ascyris kept his head leaned against the window of the car door.

"I hear you ma," he mumbled underneath his breath. Selene, his mother, huffed with a shake of her head as she pulled into their neighborhood.

"We had a deal Ascyris, you go to school, get on track and get your shit together. And if you didn't follow through with your end of the deal you do what?" She asked him with a deep frown etched onto her face.

He opted to not say anything and just continued his staring out the window. It was a pretty day outside, and it felt so good considering it was October and they lived in the midwest. He had even opted to wear shorts, he paired it with a sweater that had Kobe Bryant number, 24, on the back.

He watched with a blank stare as they passed the familiar houses of his distant neighbors.

"You live with your fucking father, ain't nun of that staying out all night and doing what you wanna do," she ranted on, the words going in and out of 13 year old Ascyris's ear. The car was slowing down as his mom finally made the dreadful turn into their driveway.

She unlocked her seatbelt and faced her son with a scowl on her face.

She didn't know what had gotten into her son, all she could do was simply pray and hope his father would straighten him out.

"Get out my car," she told him tossing the keys into his lap, he grabbed the house keys and quickly exited his mother's car. He walked up the few steps of the front porch and unlocked the front door with an attitude.

He tossed the keys on the couch when he walked inside and immediately made his way to the back of the house where his room was located.

He plopped down on his bed and thought about the events that had occurred earlier today.

EARLIER TODAY

Ascyris and his best friend of 5 years, Duress, walked out of the classroom with large smiles on their face as they joked about the lesson their teacher had presented in class.

"Bro i'm tryna get so high right now," LJ, another one of their friends stressed as he walked up to the 2 laughing boys.

"What's wit you?" Ascyris asked his friend as they made their way through the semi crowded halls. It was finally their lunch period, since they were 8th graders they were the last to eat lunch. The boys were starved and ready to chat with each other after a long weekend.

"Bro Janiyah just been tripping, she still mad cause I didnt get her nothing for her birthday, like nigga I told you I was broke, what you expect? The fuck, we only 13," he ranted with a deep mug on his face.
