"Alright class I am going to partner you up and you have the rest of this week and this weekend to finish reading Huck Finn and to put together a Power Point," Mr. Sanders says. There is a collective moan from the class. Logan looks over at me and smiles. I smile back at him but I had a feeling that we weren't going to be partnered together. We both finished the book a week ago when I finished and submitted my NYU application. Things between us are still weird but we have been able to hang out and talk like we usually do. It is hard to talk to him about Bruce and my past because he always thinks that I am going to bring up Dillon so I only talk to Liz about it when she is around.
"Here are the pairs," he began to call out student names. "Rachel and Logan. And that leaves Dillon and Amy. Remember this this due on Monday so take the last five minutes of class and plan everything out with your partner."
Logan got up out of his seat and went and started to speak with Mr. Sanders. He is probably trying to switch partners so that he can keep me away from Dillon.
"Well if you look at this, we are partners in crime," Dillon says as he slides into the desk next to me. I watch as Logan huffs back to seat not getting what he wants.
"What is your boy toy so upset about?" He asks. I turn and look at Dillon, annoyed that he is still calling Logan my boy toy.
"Look, Dillon, I have already finished reading the book so just send me your notes and I will put the power point together myself." The less I am around him the better. I don't want any old feelings to come creeping back and messing up my relationship with Logan.
"Oh and one more thing class," Mr. Sanders shouts, causing the classroom to become silent. "I want a picture of you and your partner working together on this assignment."
"I guess I can't just send you the notes then," Dillon smirks. "I'll text you when I am done reading the book."
"Dillon?" my voice shakes. He turns back around in his seat and look at me. "Please don't make a big deal out of this."
"Aims you are sounding like Logan is our son and we are going through a divorce," he chuckles. I try to crack a smile because I know he is joking around but I can't. "I won't. I promise. I can tell he means a lot to you so I will try to leave you alone as much as possible." Dillon stands up and towards his desk right as the bell rings dismissing us. I close my notebook and start to put my supplies away.
"Amy can I speak with you for just a moment?" Mr. Sanders asks. Logan and I make eye contact and I nod my head slightly. He gets the clue and leaves us alone.
"Logan told me that you finished your NYU application. Dillon has expressed his interest in applying to NYU and I paired you two up so that you could maybe give him pointers and help him come up with some ideas for the essay portion. I have known Logan for the past four years and when he was dating Gina and I split those two up so that they could work with other students, I have never seen him become so outraged. Did something happen?" He asks.
I don't mind by his reasons of pairing me up with Dillon. Naturally Dillon would say that he wants to go to NYU because of the corner we have both been backed up into because of Bruce. But the only thing I really paid any attention to was the mention of Gina. I have heard about her from a few other girls but other than that it is like she has disappeared from everyone's memory.
"Dillon is an old friend of mine and Logan is just really protective," I finally say, snapping out of my thoughts.
"I can let you change partners then," Mr. Sanders says before I cut him off.
"No. It's okay. Really it is," I try to reassure him and myself. I sling my backpack over my shoulder and I walk out of the room.
"What did he have to say?" Logan asks. I turn and look at him.
