"I wish I knew" I chuckled. Maybe it had to do with the fact that I am his "daughter" or that I stole from him.
"Oh" Liz is sitting there trying to find an excuse. "Where did you go when your father passed? If you don't mind me asking"
I shook my head no. "It is a home for orphans" As soon as I told her this she frowned. There was a knock at the door causing us to jump. I got up and opened the door slightly.
"House keeping" a girl told me with a smile. I opened up the door for her to come in. I made eye contact with Liz and we both shared the same thoughts. Silently we slipped our backpacks onto our backs and walked out of our room so she could clean it for us. There is a small courtyard at the Motel next to the dining room where we had breakfast.
"Let's plan out what we are going to do" I suggest to Liz.
"I was thinking the same thing" she smiles at me. Liz takes out a small spiral notebook and a pen. "Okay we have living arrangements for the next two weeks. We need to find a job that pays well".
"Is there a mall nearby?" I ask. She probably doesn't know and neither do I.
"Hold on" she gets us from her chair and walks away. I let out a sigh of relief that I have been holding in. She took my story really well. Sure I twisted it a little but if she knew all of it she wouldn't stay with me. I know that is selfish but I haven't had a real friend that I can just sit and talk to like that.
"Here we go" she calls out causing me to jump. "Oops! Sorry to scare you" she giggles. I smile back and notice that she is holding a map. Liz lays it flat onto the table and makes an X where we are staying.
"The mall is right..." my eyes scan the map for the mall.
"There!" It is only a short distance from the Motel and it's not that bad of a walk.
"Perfect!" she squeals.
A realization started to dawn on me. I can't work at a mall. He is still out there and is probably looking for me to make a mistake like that.
"Earth to Amy" Liz waves her hand in front of my face.
"Sorry, I just realized that I can't work in at any public place. He is still in Portland. I know that he is and if I get a job..." I start to explain but trail off at the thought of him finding me so easily.
"I understand" she tells me.
"You can feel free to work at the mall" I tell her. I feel bad that I am crushing her idea but it is too much of a risk.
"I don't want to walk there by myself" she says. I study the map for a moment and something catches my eye.
"Look" I point to the map, "There is a bus and one of the stops is a block from here and I can walk you to the stop when you leave and arrive."
"Oh! Perfect!" she smiles again. "What are you going to do?"
"Don't worry about me" I smile to reassure her. "I'll think of something" The girl that was cleaning our room passed by.
"Oh look she is done" Liz notices too. We get up and go back to our room. Liz is talking my ear off and telling me the stores that she is going to apply too.
"Oh wait how will the stores going to contact me?" she asks.
"There is a Target nearby" I tell her. "Let's go there and we can get supplies and you can get a prepaid phone"

We reached Target and its 2 o'clock. I grab a cart and set my back pack inside giving my shoulders a rest. We walk up and down the aisles looking for the bare essentials. We grabbed some food also to snack on. Ever since I told her about the prepaid phone, she keeps trying to convince me to get one too.
"Oh look! It's the IPhone 4s!" she squeals. Her eyes move from the phone to the price tag. She sighs and moves away from that phone. I found one that slides and has a QWERTY keyboard. The phone itself is on sale for $24.99 and for unlimited talk and text it is $30 per month. I'm not going to need the unlimited but I have a feeling Liz might.
"Excuse me, but can I help you?" a raspy voice asks me.
I turn around and see a guy wearing a Target red polo shirt. His blonde hair is swept up and his brown roots are showing. His piercing blue eyes hold my gaze and I start to forget what I was going to ask.
"Yeah, if I get this phone and get 500 minutes of talk and 1,000 messages and I decide that it is not enough can I upgrade it to the unlimited?" I ask. I already know the answer is yes but man this guy is so attractive.
"Yeah you can" he smiles at me. "At the end of the month, just come in and buy it and then we can help you activate it."
"Thanks" I smile at him. We hold the eye contact
"Amy!" Liz comes running up to me. She is out of breath. I start to panic a little bit.
"He-he...He's here!"
