"Hello"
"Hi Amy this is Liz's mother, Blake. How are you?" the sweet voice asked. When Liz told me that her mom was a lawyer I thought she would be cold, strict and mean. I guess Liz's opinion of her mom is different because of their background.
"I'm good. How are you?" I politely ask her. Liz's eyes are watching my every move as I pace back and forth on the phone.
"I'm well thank you for asking" she replies. "Let's get down to business. Liz was telling me that you lived in Pasadena and in an orphanage. Am I correct?"
"Yes" I hear typing in the background.
"Can you give me the name?" the tone of her voice changed from the sweet mother to a business woman who is in charge of a multimillion company.
"Casa Pasadena" More typing.
"Wonderful! I just found it and I am going to make a few phone calls to request a few documents."
"Okay" I slowly reply.
"Amy, Liz mentioned that you are having legal troubles with an abusive relative. I will make sure that this transition to be in my custody is a smooth one and you will be protected at all costs. I am flying out in the next few days to find you girls an apartment and get you in school too." Blake says, the motherly tone returned.
"Okay. Thank you so much Blake. This means a lot to me" A tear makes its way down my cheek. I forgot what it was like to have a mom take care of me
"You're welcome sweetie. You girls hang tight and I will call in a few hours" She hangs up.
"What did she say?" Liz jumps up from her bed where she was perched.
"That she will be here in a few days and is going to set everything up for us", I tell her backing up a little bit.
"So now what?" she asks. I have no idea. We are kinda stuck and we don't know anyone in Portland. Plus Bruce is in a room a few doors down so we can't really leave. We could do her hair. She did buy blonde dye to lighten up her hair. Although I'm not too sure her mom would be thrilled with it. Right as I open my mouth to suggest that we do her hair, there is a knock at the door. We both look at one another, panic written all over our faces. My phone on the nightstand starts to chirp.
Logan: Open up the door...a guy is looking at me weirdly
Logan: Please
"Can you get the door Liz?" I ask realizing that I am dressed in the same clothes. I grab a clean shirt and jeans and lock myself in the bathroom. I quickly change and can hear Liz inviting Logan in.
"Hey" I greet Logan as I emerge from the bathroom. He is looking around the room taking it all in. He barely got to see last night because we left so quickly. His eyes finally land on me and he looks me up and down smiling.
"Hey" he blushes. I can't help but blush when I see Liz roll her eyes "I brought food" He holds up a Mc Donald's bag. Liz covers her mouth trying not to laugh.
"I'm going to go grab some drinks from the front" she says trying to keep a straight face. "What do you want?"
"I'll take a coke" Logan says as he fishes his wallet out of his pocket.
"I will too" I tell her.
"I'll pay for our drinks. I didn't know what you like to drink" He hands her a twenty.
"Thanks", she says before leaving us alone. Logan starts to take the food out of the bag and places it on the table. My phone buzzes.
Liz: HE'S A KEEPER!! he brings food and pays for our drinks. idk what else you need in a man.
When I read this, I try my best to not burst out laughing.
"Thanks for getting us food" I tell him. "This is so sweet of you"
"No worries" he smiles at me.
"Aren't you supposed to be in school?" I realized that even though it is noon, he has school today.
"I get out at 11:45 every day. The perks of being a senior" he smirks.
"Oh okay" I knew a few seniors last year that left early and they absolutely loved it. "I might start going to Portland Private" I blurt out.
"Seriously?" I nod.
"That would be awesome", he smiles. "Although as much as I love your hair color you would have to dye" he laughs.
"Really?" he nods.
"You can have the underside colored but the top part has to be a natural color" he says.
"Is it really that obvious that my hair isn't a natural color" I tease.
"No not at all" he winks at me. I laugh. "How long does it take to get drinks?" Logan jokes.
Right as he said that Liz enters our room.
"Obviously she got lost" I start to laugh and Logan joins in. Liz sets the drinks down on the table and hands Logan the change.
"At least I went and got them" she defends herself. We leave it at that and we start to pick out what we are going to eat. I grab the box of chicken nuggets and a thing of fries.
"So Logan how is your reading coming along" I ask him before shoving fries into my mouth.
"Ha ha real funny Amy" he mocks.
"Still on page two?" I narrow my eyes at him.
"Nope I got to page 5" he smiles proudly. I roll my eyes at him and Liz starts to laugh.
"You guys are so cute together" I feel the heat rising in my cheeks and Logan focuses on his food trying to hide his smile.
"Thanks" I tell her sarcastically.
"Karma for laughing at me when I walked in and you two started to laugh at me" she sticks her tongue out at me.
"Are you sure you two aren't sisters?" he asks. Liz and I look at each other and start to laugh. Hopefully very soon I will be. Logan shakes his head at us and opens the coke bottle.
"Holy shit" he shouts, as soda pours out the top all over him and the floor. This only causes Liz and I to laugh even louder. Logan joins in as he attempts to wipe up the mess.
"Hey Amy can you go to my car and grab my soccer clothes from the trunk?" He tosses his keys at me.
"Sure" I catch them and exit the room. The sun that was out this morning has disappeared behind the clouds and there is a cold breeze.
"Yeah I know...Hold on...I've got to go." Bruce is outside his room like last night. I hear his footsteps walk towards my direction. Instead of getting the clothes out from the trunk, I climb into the driver's seat and turn the car on. My heart starts to pound in my chest as I feel the fear return. I put the car in reverse and pull out of the parking lot. In the rear view mirror I see Bruce standing in the middle of the parking lot. I get all the way to Target and park. My hands shake as I pull my phone out of my pocket. I call Liz trying to calm myself.
"Where are you?! Are you okay?!" she shouts. I break down and start to cry.
"He's found me Liz. I'm not safe" I tell her. My backpack with the gun is in the room. I have nothing to protect me.
