"Your total is $6.99." The cashier said. You looked up from your wallet to hand him a ten, and you hesitated.
You knew that face, and you knew that head of teal hair, but you didn't know why.
You bit your lip, handing him the money and taking a step back. His name tag read "Shin" and that didn't ring a bell either.
A penny rolled out of the register into the little bowl it sits in, and you didn't move to pick it up. You imagined the bowl was very germy, and you didn't think it would be worth it just to pick up a single penny.
To your surprise, though, Shin grabbed the coin and handed it to you with the three dollars he owed you.
"Here you go..." He said, pressing a few buttons on the screen and then holding out the money, "Three dollars and a... singular cent."
You shuddered.
"Thanks." You said, grabbing your three drinks and walking out of the store.
You didn't understand why that guy looked familiar to you. You'd just moved back to your hometown after three years of being away.
You'd moved immediately after high school, so you must've known him from high school.
You tried to remember where you'd seen that teal hair.
And then it hit you.
~ * ~
When you were a senior in high school, you had somewhat of a boyfriend. He had bright green hair and always wore dark clothing and a red scarf to school. You didn't have any classes with him, and you couldn't remember how you'd met him, just that he was your boyfriend.
You'd walk around school and hold hands and he'd touch you sweetly and softly and call you the most beautiful in the world.
But when it came to anyone else you were close with, he wouldn't bother.
"I wanna be the most important person in your life." He told you, "The only one."
The only important person? Or the only person at all?
You should've questioned him, but now your heart ached for him.
You really liked Hiyori. You thought he liked you too. But apparently, he also really liked that head of teal hair.
"That really sucks, right Hiyo—" You turned from your friend to face your boyfriend, but he'd somehow slithered away as your friend was talking about her tragic breakup.
You looked around for him, but you couldn't see him anywhere. In a sea of students with brown and black hair, you couldn't see his vibrant green.
The decision to walk away and find him is what led to the last friend you had leaving you.
"Hiyori?" You called out, entering the courtyard. You still couldn't find him. This wasn't the first time he'd done something like this and you weren't able to find him, but he'd been acting strange recently.
And that made you worry.
"Hiyori?" You continued to call for him. You went back into the school to look for him, and you found his green hair under a staircase.
"...Hiyori?"
His hand was held out. You moved to see that he wasn't the only one there.
There was someone else. Someone with unique, teal hair concealed under a green beanie.
