He Was Fired

Keiji was already gone when you woke up in the morning. That wasn't surprising, because it was noon when you woke up, but you wished you'd gotten the chance to talk to him before he left.

You spent your "morning" getting ready for work, and finally arrived just before three.

Shin greeted you as if you were a customer when you walked in, tapping something on his phone, then turning it off and putting it away, "Oh. Y/N, you're here early."

"Not really. I start in two minutes."

Shin furrowed his eyebrows at you, "I thought you didn't start until five today."

You went into the break room and dropped off a few things, grabbing your name tag and clocking in. When you went back to the counter, Shin still looked confused, "No. I told you last night that I started at three."

"You didn't tell me that. I thought you were starting at five for the rest of this week."

"I talked to Nao and changed it to three. But I told you last night, when you asked, that I was starting at three."

"What are you talking about?"

You pulled your phone out and went behind the counter, sitting on your bar stool right next to Shin. You pulled up the conversation you'd had with him the previous night. You pointed at your message stating you'd start at three, "See?"

Shin only looked more confused after seeing the evidence. "Is it okay if I hold your phone for a second?"

You gave Shin your phone, "You don't have to ask."

Shin looked at you strangely before scrolling through the texts between you. He mumbled the phone number to himself.

"That's not my number." He said, handing you back your phone. You stared at the screen, confused.

"It isn't?" Shin shook his head, "But it says... Shin."

"Do you have any friends who know you got a new job recently?"

"No... I don't have friends."

Shin took a deep breath, exhaling slowly, "...Okay. Well, that isn't my number. I don't know who that is."

You didn't understand.

"I don't understand. Why would they pretend to be you? I don't even... know you that well." You said quietly.

Shin was hesitant, "I don't wanna scare you, but it's probably someone who you normally wouldn't want to contact. They might... show up today."

You looked up at him in panic, "Oh no. I don't know... who it could be."

Shin did. Shin recognized that number. Even if it had been out of use for the last three years and Shin hadn't looked at it once since then, he remembered that number.

Who would be the only person who knows about you, Shin, and Nao, but not enough details to just show up?

Of course.

"I'm gonna be working until closing tonight," Shin said. "So if need be... I'll protect you." Shin held an arm up to flex weakly. He smiled slightly at you, trying to get you to be more comfortable.

"You are? I thought you were leaving at seven."

"No... I'm working until eight." That wasn't true. But with what happened two nights ago with him and Hiyori, he didn't want to risk something similar happening to you.

He didn't know you well, but if that's how you reacted to a video of Hiyori, he couldn't imagine what would happen if you were face to face with him.

"Oh... cool. We'll be closing together." You smiled at him, trying to convince him you weren't nervous either way. Shin seemed okay, but you didn't think he'd be able to defend you if the time came when he needed to.
