Hush

Keiji didn't come home that night.

A woman with black hair came up to you after your shift and talked to you.

"You were a witness of a crime today," She said, her voice cool and stern, "That crime was not meant to happen. The police department will give you money if you promise not to speak of this ordeal to anyone not involved. Rather, don't speak of it to anyone again."

And that was that. You assumed she'd given Shin the same talk.

It wasn't long after the incident that you got off, though. The store needed to close for the rest of the day.

Because it'd turned into a crime scene.

One that Keiji had created.

You got to sleep in your own bed for the first time in a week. It smelled like Keiji, and you didn't like it. You didn't feel comforted by the smell of him anymore.

In the morning you found him sitting on the couch. He didn't look up at you when you closed the bedroom door behind you.

You sat down next to him, and he didn't look at you then, either.

"...Keiji?"

He turned to look at you, and his face was pale. His eye bags were almost black.

He looked awful.

"Are you okay?"

He didn't respond.

"I'm sorry."

He didn't respond.

"Won't you say something?"

He didn't respond.

"...Keiji, please. Tell me what happened."

"He didn't have a gun." He said quietly.

You bit the inside of your lip.

You went to work the same as normal, but you and Shin didn't talk when you were together. You'd seen a man die yesterday. You made short conversation with customers, as was required of you, but there wasn't much else to say.

Shin drove you home at the end of the day, and Keiji wasn't home when you got there. You didn't know what he was doing, but you shouldn't care anyway.

In the morning he was still gone. You turned on the TV, and it was already on the news station.

"The officer was shot dead in her office at 7:27 this morning. Her murderer was one of her coworkers — A man by the name of Keiji Shinogi—"

You stopped breathing for a moment.

The screen displayed a photo of Keiji. His mugshot, and next to it, a photo of the woman who had talked to you two days ago.

"The killing of one of the higher ranking police officers in their department has caused an outrage in the community. People want justice to be served in honor of Miss Megumi Sasahara."

He killed his boss.

"In an interview with Mr. Shinogi, he said, quote, "I needed to do it. I can't say why, but I did." Now, here's Mr. Takada with the weather."

You turned off the TV. You didn't need to see the weather forecast to know it'd be raining today.

Shin tried to talk to you at work, but you were unreceptive.
