"I saw the... hiring sign." You said to the cashier.
Shin, again.
"Yeah?" He said, looking up at you. "Did you want to apply?"
"...Yeah."
"Okay, well, as the... only... employee... other than the manager, I'm required to give you a little pop quiz. Come with me real quick." Shin stood up from the bar stool he sat on and led you to a different room, closing the checkout before leaving.
"You're the only employee?"
"Yup," Shin said, making a popping sound with the p.
"How is that even possible?" You asked, genuinely appalled. "Doesn't it get busy here?"
"Not really," He said, closing a door behind the two of you. He'd led you to a room that looked like it was supposed to be a break room. "It's a 7-Eleven. We mostly just get teenagers 'n shit. Y'know?"
"Uh, yeah."
Shin motioned for you to sit on one of the chairs, and he went into a small office to grab a clipboard. He sat down on a chair across from you, "So, do you have a criminal record?"
"Not yet." You said.
"Cool. How old are you?"
"I'm 21."
"Awesome. You can sell alcohol and cigarettes. Here." He handed you the clipboard and a pen. The clipboard had a paper with questions to fill out, such as your name, age, birthday, past education, and past work experience.
You didn't think much of it, and you forgot that Shin was Hiyori's lover until he brought up your past education experience.
"You went to Sonobeno too?" He said, looking at your responses. Your heart seized. You hoped he wouldn't suddenly recognize you. You wanted nothing to do with that part of your life again.
"...Yeah."
"Same graduating class, too. I don't think I knew you, though." He said, standing up. He went back into the office to drop off the clipboard, and you let out a breath.
He didn't remember you. So you didn't need to feel strange about it anymore.
That was in the past, and you had a new boyfriend now. Hiyori was dead, and so were any feelings you had for him and that whole situation.
"Okay cool. Considering you're of age and not a criminal, my manager or whoever will contact you soon and you'll probably get the job. Hopefully you don't mind me too much because now that we have two actual employees, my boss is probably gonna stop coming in as often. ...Meaning I'll be your only coworker."
Fun. Hopefully other people apply, but you couldn't imagine a very desired job being a 7-Eleven cashier.
"Yeah, that's fine. You seem... chill..." You responded.
"Thanks. Really appreciate it." He smiled, chuckling slightly. He led you back to the front of the store and went back to the register. "Is there anything else you need?" He sat back down on his stool.
"Uh, do you guys have cake mix?"
~ * ~
The house smelled good after you'd finished baking your cake. You didn't decorate it very much, just putting a layer of frosting. There wasn't much of an occasion. You just wanted to make a cake.
You were eating some of it when Keiji arrived home.
He hummed when he entered the house, "It smells good. What did you make?"
