It's Really Too Complicated

"Nao texted me," Shin said in the morning, "She doesn't have classes today, so she's fine with us just working until... six."

"I don't think that's how jobs usually work." You said, splayed out on the couch bed you'd pulled out for Shin last night.

"Yeah? I think you're right. But that's good. I had something I wanted to do today."

"Oh? Really?" Shin nodded his head, "What is it?"

He looked at you, "It's a secret!" He put a finger to his mouth.

"I'm really glad you decided to meet with me, Y/N." Hiyori smiled once you'd arrived at the park and sat near him.

"I'm not. What did you want to talk about?"

"No need to rush, dear—"

"I think I've told you before not to call me that. In high school, I didn't care, but it's different now. Don't call me dear. Don't call me anything."

Hiyori smiled a little wider, "Still, no need to rush things. What should we talk about first?"

"You asked me to come here," You said, "Why should I know?" Already off to a bad start. You'd text Shin to come get you if anything happened.

"Do you want to start with what happened in high school?"

"...Do whatever you want."

"Shinnie already told you, I'm sure?" You shook your head. Lying. "Really? Then I guess this is the first time you'll hear the full story.

"Really, I don't know what was wrong with me that day. Hearing the story of your friend being broken up with pulled at my heart. I remembered Shin at that moment. Shin had been my good friend for a year... maybe two at that point. At that moment, I remembered that I was the only person he'd ever really been close to. Since being with you, I hadn't had much time with him.

"So, I went to go find him. He was hiding under the stairs. He looked upset, so I decided to comfort him. You caught me at a bad time."

You furrowed your eyebrows. You wouldn't believe that narrative over Shin's. Some of it was believable, but Shin had told you that he was just minding his business when Hiyori had pulled him aside.

"Okay." Was all you said.

"Any questions?"

"Why did you fake your death?"

Hiyori shrugged his shoulders, and you felt angry.

"It's really too complicated for you to understand."

"Then help me understand." Even sitting here with him, you felt nothing for Sou Hiyori. Nothing but... anger.

"I couldn't explain it to you," He said. He looked away from you, and you looked away from him. Your eye caught a teenager in an arm cast. The sky went grey. It would rain soon.

"Then there's nothing more to say." You said, standing up.

Hiyori grabbed your arm, "Surely we could talk about more."

You jerked your arm away, "No. I'm done. And I don't want to see you again."

You pulled your phone out and texted Shin, walking away from the past.

Your shift was so short. Not nearly enough time to talk to Shin how you wanted. You wanted to spend today with someone you cared about. He was the only person left in your life.
