On Wednesday we had Physical Preparation the same as the day before, and the now regular Extraterrestrial Studies class before lunch, with the difference that that afternoon we had something called Interpersonal Skills. In this class they taught us how to interact with interviewers, answer questions from the audience and overcome stage fright, in addition to managing our social networks.
However, what was dictated on Thursday afternoon was what was most anticipated by many.
– Welcome to the first fight class – Collins said around 6 pm in an area next to where we had done physical preparation the previous times - I trust that, by this time, they will have softened you enough in physical preparation.
– In just three days? – asked a boy with Indian features.
– Plenty of time – Tess told him and elbowed him in the ribs, to which the boy laughed and gave her a little push in response.
– Just like yesterday – Collins continued – you will have a practice partner, but today I choose them.
Ten minutes later, we were all arranged in pairs listening to the coach explain certain basic defense and attack movements, for which he used Nav, the Indian boy, and Tess. After that, they gave us enough time to practice.
Collins walked past each couple, giving his comments.
He first passed by Briar and Denu, who while practicing had begun a complex conversation about violence in the modern world. Collins then positioned himself next to Lexa and Jin, whose height difference was similar to that between Jasper and me.
The coach watched them for a few moments until they stopped and looked back at him without understanding what he was analyzing or waiting.
– Height is not your strength, and neither is weight – Collins said to Jin –. So, make your opponent lose balance on his feet, then hit towards the face.
– What about me? – Lexa asked.
– For a taller enemy, same rules. For shorter enemies, make sure you are faster than them – Lexa nodded at that answer and Collins added: – continue practicing the first movements.
The coach continued with the next group, observed Nav and Tess, and quickly moved on when he saw that they had no problem. Then he came to our side and after watching Jasper and me for a few moments, he spoke to the entire group: - The same movements, repeat them once each, and then in turns, make 4 random movements that your partner will have to block.
Of course in slow motion, Jasper did his Right Cross, Left Cross, Right Hook, Left Hook sequence; and then I did it.
– Did you know how to fight before?
– Why do you think that? – I asked back.
– I see that all this comes easily to you – Jasper responded, to which he made a false hit that did not distract me, perhaps to prove his point.
