The car journey was awkward, I didn't know what was going to happen when we arrived at the Romero Estate. I awkwardly sat in between a bodyguard and Fransisco, Alexander was seated at the front next to the driver. I wasn't sure what to do, where to look or what to say. I fidgeted with the fabric of my dress, choosing to stare at my legs. It felt strange to me, being in a car with people other than my family. I hesitantly looked out the window, admiring the streets of Madrid at night. The city lights were visible, couples, tourists were all crowding the area.
"What are you going to do with her, when we arrive?" Alexander asked, facing forwards.
I felt Fransisco shift slightly, his body was faced forwards but his head was turned to the right, observing the outside just like myself.
"She's going to meet my mother and father properly, pick out the dress and things. The rest is none of my concern",
Fransisco explained bluntly.
Part of me was irritated at how both men spoke as if I wasn't present. I hoped Alexander didn't mean it, but I felt as though Fransisco meant every single part of it.
"How good is your Spanish?" Alexander asked, still not meeting my eye.
It didn't seem like he was even asking me, it was phrased as more of a statement than a question.
I slightly flushed, grateful we were sat in the dark so it wasn't visible. I knew a variety of languages- English, Bengali, French, German, Russian and Arabic. Yet, Spanish wasn't one of them. And none of the languages I knew were even remotely close. And the only reason I knew those languages was strictly because of the people father worked with.
"I know the basics", I confessed.
"Not good enough" Fransisco muttered.
It annoyed me, being classed as not good enough for not knowing one language.
"How many languages do you know?" I snapped.
It had only then struck me, what I had done. I could imagine my mother scolding me, telling me I should've kept quiet and behaved myself. My body slightly tensed and I wasn't sure what I could've said to make it better.
" I'm sorry I didn't mean to-" I started, before Fransisco cut me off by raising his hand.
Throughout the rest of the journey, I couldn't take my mind off of it. I didn't know why he let me off, but I kept a mental note to shut the fuck up most of the time.
My hand was rested on my thigh, and I could feel the sharp diamonds lightly scratching my thigh as I moved my hand. Even in the dark, I could see the main stone shining, and even winking at me. I slightly turned my head to find Fransisco watching me admire the ring.
"So it's up to your standards?" He asked, raising his eyebrows.
Reminding myself of last time, I just gave a nod in response. Whatever I said about the ring would have always been an understatement, it was truly, beauty wrapped around my finger.
We eventually drove into a private area, and I watched as four guards stood outside a tall black gate, it screamed wealth. It at the the initial "R" intwined, and stone pillars were on each end of the gate with statues of lions and eagles. Two out of the four guards on either end opened the gate, and we drove through the driveway. The house itself, whether it was a villa or mansion, was stunning. The middle of the courtyard held a large fountain, with stone statues of angels with archery kits. The mansion itself was lily White concrete, it had tall mahogany brown doors and a large circular balcony on top, beneath it being a large crystal chandelier. The windows were large and the walls had incredibly detailed tiles. It was truly magnificent. The Astor Manor was just as magnificent, but incredibly different.
Alexander and Fransisco got put of the car first and unexpectedly, Fransisco held open the door with me, while looking up at the sky. He ended up leading the way into the mansion, when presumably his mother and father were stood infront of the doors. His mother looked at me from top to bottom, treating me with a look of disappointment. As soon as she saw Fransisco, her eyes lit up and immediately pulled him in for a hug. She released her son, and ended up staring at Alexander for a little.
"Come, Felicia. Let us properly meet our son's fiancé" Mr Romero said, as he wrapped his arm around his wife before leading her inside.
Me and Alexander looked at each other for a little, before eventually following Fransisco and his father inside.
