"You are to sleep in this room" a maid informed me, before she quickly rushed back downstairs. The room was lovely, a luxurious Queen size bed with pearl white satin sheets and multiple pillows. The walls had fine art and even had a grand piano in the room as well as a violin. I walked into the room with the box containing my dress in hand, and placed it on top of the nearest ottoman.
I sat on the bed, admiring the room while listening to the men chatter away downstairs. I stared at the piano- it had been too long since I had last played. I knew I wouldn't have the notes memorised in my head, but my hands would remember.
I carefully walked to the piano, and sat down on the stool. The piano itself was white with gold lining and had delicate keys. It didn't take me long to realise it was none other than a Steinway Grand Piano. I slowly pressed on finger on the C# key, to make sure it was perfectly in tune. And it was. Without realising, I placed my left middle finger on F#, and my right thumb and middle finger on C# and F#, and I began playing a song that was so familiar.
As I approached the chorus, I realised I had been playing "Experience", and after each key my finger touched it felt like magic. I couldn't take my eyes off of the keys, I started to picture my childhood in London, to my teen years in Madrid and I felt the sickly feeling of nostalgia. Music was the language of the soul and nothing in my mind could have ever changed that. After each key, even after each bow movement on the violin, I was brought to another world where it was just myself and music.
When I had reached the end, I felt oddly satisfied. I turned around to locate my violin, when I froze.
Leaning on the door frame, was a tall and muscular figure in an expensive, black Tom Ford shirt matched with expensive cologne- Fransisco. His sleeves were rolled up, exposing his sleeves of tattoos on each arm, which matched his neck tattoo, in a way. I slowly moved my eyes until I met eyes with him. He stood in a way where it told me he was there for a while, too long for my liking.
"You play well" he said, quietly.
I awkwardly adjusted my skirt while sat down, and looked away before muttering a small,
"Thank you".
Fransisco checked the time on his rolex, before folding his arms again and facing me while leaning against the door.
"I assume you had a tutor, as a pretty girl with her daddy's wealth, hm?" Fransisco said in his Spanish accent, with a smirk like he guessed right.
I turned to look at the piano keys, and nodded no.
"I never had a tutor, I can't read sheet music so I play by ear" I confessed, almost embarrassed.
"Impressive" Francisco stated, bluntly.
"Did you pick out a nice dress?" He asked, in a way I couldn't tell whether he was sarcastic or not.
"Mhm" I responded, just as bluntly.
Fransisco began to nod slowly as he looked around my new room, almost to himself.
"You know how this marriage works, right?" He asked, as he continued to look around.
"We basically avoid each other, do what we want and attend family gatherings and events together, nothing more" I stated quietly, positive it was the answer he was looking for.
I wasn't sure what I expected, I knew he didn't want the marriage either but it felt odd to me. Marriage was such a large act of commitment to another, it was an act of love and devotion. I wanted to love and be loved, but I couldn't and I wouldn't, because that was the reality of being born with a silver spoon in the mouth, except it was made from blood money.
"Exactly. If I'm out late, don't do anything. If you're late, I won't do anything, yeah? We won't share rooms" he stated, as he finally locked eyes with me.
"Okay" I agreed, unsure of facial expression.
"Okay" he said, as he eventually stopped leaning on the door frame and left, leaving the door open.
Annoyed, I stood up and went to close the door, when I caught Alexander winking at me from the end of the hall, near the bathroom. I couldn't suppress a smile.
