Regulus tries not to think of his parents. He tried not to think about just how much it hurts that they aren't in his life anymore. It hurts so much, and he hates it so much. He feels like it's not okay for him to want them there.
When Regulus thought about marriage when he was younger, he always thought about watching the love of his love walk down the isle. Slowly, that image turned into a boring image of some girl under a veil. Then Regulus didn't think about it at all. Because by that point, Sirius had left, and Regulus had no choice. He had no choice in who he would marry, or how the marriage would happen. He also figured out he was gay, so that didn't help.
Then, everything had changed when James and Sirius came into the picture. Slowly, he could begin to picture a future. He could picture a home and cute dates. Eventually, Regulus could picture marriage.
It took a long time for Regulus to come to terms with the fact that his family wouldn't be there. That they wouldn't care, or they'd kill them all before his parents would ever attend. When James asked him, he hesitated, and that haunts Regulus to this day. His family, those people, they still have a chokehold on him and his life.
He obviously said yes, but James' face was worried. His excitement had dulled, and Regulus heart ached. Regulus ended up explaining his fear of marriage. All the reasons he hated the thought of it; all the reasons that he loved it. His family not being there. James was wonderful about it, like always.
That's how they're where they are now. Regulus fumbles with his tie once more because his hands are shaking so bad. He's never messed this up before. He takes a sharp breath when someone grabs his hands. He looks to see Sirius smiling nervously at him. "Let me get it, Reg," Sirius offers. Regulus let's out a breath as he moved his hands.
Regulus let's his eyes slip closed. When Sirius is done with his tie, Regulus leans his head against Sirius' shoulder. He feels Sirius' hands slip around his shoulders. Regulus feels tears gather in his eyes. Sirius squeezes him tighter.
"Merlin, I'm sorry," Regulus chokes pushing away from Sirius. "I- I just- this isn't how I would've ever pictured my wedding. It's so nice, and it's exactly what I want, but-" Regulus looks away as he pauses. "But, it hurts that they're not here. Sirius, they're assholes, so why does it hurt so bad?" Regulus looks to his big brother as if he has all the answers in the world. Sometimes, it feels like he does.
"They've buried themselves into you, Reg. You loved them then it's like they were simply ripped away from you. They're a wound, Reggie. It hurts because it's still healing. Because, even necessary wounds hurt," Sirius whispers. Regulus falls into his brother's arms. He grips Sirius' shoulders. They stay like that for a while. Soon enough, he feels Sirius slowly nudge him away. "You have a wedding to attended, Reggie."
As he was walked down the isle, Regulus cried in front of Sirius. He cried in front of James, in front of all his friends, all James' family, everyone. He gripped so hard onto Sirius' arm as they had walked to James. Regulus sobbed as James said his vows. Regulus choked out his own. James cried just as hard as Regulus did. Regulus held onto James so tightly when they finally kissed that he wasn't sure he would ever let go. James held him just as tight.
James pulled away crying harder than ever as he looked towards everyone. James simply held up their interlocked fingers, and he smiled at everyone. He smiled out at his friends like he was so proud to be Regulus'. Regulus pulled their hands down to press a kiss to James' hand. Regulus listened as every began getting up, began clapping and cheering and hollering. He heard catcalls in the mix too. He didn't look away from James, who absolutely beamed as he looked around. Regulus pulled James roughly into a hug. Just a simple hug, on their wedding night.
Regulus let James chest slam against his, and he wrapped his arms tightly around James. He practically tried to burry himself in James. James tugged him as if he was trying to tuck Regulus inside as well.
They stood like that for a solid five minutes. They're grip never loosened. They stood there ignoring all else, and they only peeled away from each other when Sirius came up to them. His hand gently on both their shoulders.
"I'm so making fun of both of you for that shit."
