A group of boys, two of them Riel unfortunately knew, greeted them beyond the flowery confetti. Sparkles and lights shined perfectly upon them as the tall blond said their introductions.
"This is where the school's handsomest boys, with too much time on their hands, entertain young ladies who also have way too much time on their hands. Just think of it as Ouran Academy's elegant playground for the super-rich and beautiful. Welcome to The Ouran Host Club!"
'The hell-?'
Riel looked dead in the face as sparkles bounced off of him. Haruhi seemed curious, and when dots connected and he got out of his 'what the hell is this' state, he realized what was happening. He didn't need the newest notification in his mind to tell him.
「 The World's Story Has Begun. 」
He tuned out everything from that point on. He wasn't even there. He was the air. A cloud. He was a figment of imagination. He was so in tune with the background that not even Haruhi noticed when he'd gravitated to the couch in the room.
She could handle herself, he was sure of it. Though it was strange how even they thought she was a he. Especially those insufferable twins. They take many classes with her, more than he did. Surely, even though she didn't wear the uniform, they would have noticed something.
"Hikaru, Kaoru, I believe this young man is in the same class as you, isn't he?" A glasses-wearing youth asked, though there was a glint in his eyes that said he already knew the answer and was just looking for more info.
"Yeah, but he's shy. He doesn't act very sociably, so we don't know much about him."
'No, you just avoided her like the rest of them. But Haruhi also didn't seek you out, because you're annoying.'
He didn't care if that was just his opinion.
"Hm. Well, that wasn't very polite." Straightening his posture and pushing up his glasses, he courteously greeted Haruhi, "Welcome to the Ouran Host Club, Mr. Honor Student."
"What?" The tall blond was surprised before he was elated, "You must be Haruhi Fujioka! You're the exceptional honor student we've heard about."
"How did you know my name?"
"Why, you're infamous." The glasses one explains, "It's not every day that a commoner gains entrance into our academy. You must have an audacious nerve to work hard enough to fight your way into this school as an honor student Mr. Fujioka."
"Well uh, thank you I guess."
"You're welcome. You're a hero to other poor people, Fujioka. You've shown the world that even a poor person can excel at an elite private academy. It must be hard for you to constantly be looked down upon by others."
'She isn't that poor, and she isn't pitiful. Stop talking down to her.'
He could tell that the blond one didn't mean his words as an insult, but still, Haruhi was not some exotic specimen. She worked hard, and her work shows, end of the discussion.
But everywhere, everything she does is either magnified because she was a regular person who achieve what others paid lots of money to, or downplayed because she was normal. Not everyone in the world was filthy rich and prosperous, and even though she was nowhere near rich, she wasn't in poverty.
These people don't seem to understand that. All they saw was a commoner. It honestly made Riel very angry.
Sick, dying, and worried, Riel had lived a portion of his previous life in that state. He may not have shown it in the same ways as other children, but he was. He used his smarts to climb out of that hole, and he built a ladder with them to get the rest of his precious people out with him.
