Riel. That was the name he was given before he was left on the doorstep of some random orphanage. He remembered his mother's sneer and his father's apathy the moment they dropped the basket without even a note. They left as if a weight had been taken off of their shoulders. Even as young as he was, he was cognitive enough to remember that moment.
Their abandonment did not deter him, however. The orphanage that raised him was kind to him. While he was different from the other children, preferring to read educational books over fairytales or cartoons, he was well taken care of. But it wasn't long before things began to go downhill.
The orphanage saw a decline in vital funds. As the years went by, it was harder and harder to manage. They had to take out loans to make ends meet, and that only got worse when their situation just kept declining.
On top of their growing debts, Riel was diagnosed with a strange disease. The simplest way to put it was that he was tired. He was so tired that even walking for a short period of time would completely exhaust him. None could find the reason for his lack of energy, but it was serious enough to affect his body. He would also often get headaches, nosebleeds, and there were even times his heart was affected.
But even though his body was physically weak, his mind was brilliant. He made many breakthroughs in science and innovation and even started an online business out of middle school. By the time he was in high school, he'd become one of the youngest millionaires, renowned for his works. Though he made sure to keep that life and his mundane life separate and secret, so no one know but the matron that had adopted him from the orphanage knew he was the creator of such things.
While he could have graduated early, he wanted to try experiencing a simple life. He had no need to go to college, as he was already qualified for many things. His condition made it so the simplest things were hard for him. If there was one thing he wanted and was willing to go through the effort for, it was graduating school like any other his age.
He took care of the orphanage with the money he made. He made sure they never had to worry about depts, and their facilities flourished under his anonymous care. Only the matron ever knew about it, and every time she tried to persuade him to use his money for himself, he refused.
He was sure that he would have turned out very differently if he'd been left anywhere else. He was grateful to the orphanage, and thus he wanted to help them. There was no changing his mind.
No, he was not kind. This was just repayment for their care over the years. That is all.
Being alive with lots of money was the best. Being able to take care of his loved ones was nice. He could be as lazy as he needed or wanted. His life didn't need a lot of activity, he made sure of it. His goal was to live a long and successful life, and while he couldn't understand or even attempt at the joys normal teens had, he was content.
Though the friends that he somehow made during his school life didn't seem to understand how great that kind of life was.
There were four individuals that he would dare to call his friends. Asao, an energetic, athletic young man who was the polar opposite of Riel; Liliana, a fujoshi who constantly shipped him with every handsome male she saw; Chen, who was an easygoing fellow with a love for food; and Datani, a quiet, lovely young miss with a knack for fashion.
How they befriended him, an antisocial bookworm of an orphan, he'd never understand.
He was certain that he was trying to avoid interacting with people because of how troublesome it was. How did this occur?
'Well, they make my life easier. I can be even more lazy with them around.'
They tried to take him to many places with them to hang out. Of course, they didn't ask him to do more than he could. They knew his condition wouldn't handle something like that. But they made it their mission to give him a normal life experience.
