Chapter 20: You Can't Run From Your Past

A few weeks go by as the Sanctuary is at peace. Chris, Luna and Leo were at brunch. "Feeling good, Luna?" asked Chris. "Yeah. I'm glad that the Synthen is no longer in me." said Luna. "Well, Mei already disposed it and we won't have to worry about it anymore." said Chris. Carla then joins them. "Hello family." she said as they see Carla with a new hairdo. Her hair was now shorter and part of her hair was dyed in a light brownish color. "Wow, Carla." said Chris in amazement. "What do you think of the new hair?" asked Carla. "It looks cool, Mom!" said Luna. "Seems to add to your personality." said Leo. "Thanks everyone." said Carla. Then, Carla's mother, Carmen, arrived. "Hello!" she said. "Grandma!" said Luna and Leo as they hugged her. "How are my little grandbabies?" asked Carmen. "Hey Mom." said Carla as she hugs her. "Nice of you to visit us, Carmen! How's retirement suiting you?" asked Chris. "It's pretty well. Claudia and I have been enjoying our time. I see the Sanctuary's suiting you all well." said Carmen. "It's beautiful. Ain't it?" said Chris. "Kids, why don't you spend time with Grandma? Show her the place?" suggested Carla as they took her hand and went off. As they left, Kate approached them. "Chris! Carla! There's something you have to see." she said as they followed her to the entrance, where they see a crowd of wolves surrounding something. "What's going on?" asked Chris. "We were attacked by someone but he didn't make it." said the wolf as Chris and Carla looked at the corspe. "Let's take him to Mei." said Chris as they took it to the lab. Mei observes the body as she faced everyone. "What happened to him?" asked Chris. "Apparently, he died of poison. Someone or something used poison on him." explained Mei. "The question is...who or what did this to him?" said Chris. "Let me play the footage from his vest." said Mei as she played the footage. They watched the assault until they see the one responsible but the vision was blurry. "Hang on. Let me enhance the image." said Mei and as the vision clears, there was a woman with curly hair and with fangs as teeth. "Huh. It's a female but with fangs." said Mei. "Oh no." said a voice as they turned and see Carla in a worried mood. "Wait Carla? Do you know her?" asked Chris. Carla looks at the woman one more time before looking at Chris. "That's Kayla. She's......my sister." said Carla as everyone gasped. 

Minutes later, Chris, Carla and Mei were in the lab speaking private. "You have a sister? You never mentioned anything about a sibling when we met." said Chris. "Things were complicated, Chris. I was hoping to never to tell you about her." said Carla. "From the way she looks, it seems she possessed the ability of a snake. Including a poison bite and hypnotism." said Mei. "Does your mom know about her?" asked Chris as Carla nodded. As Carmen was with Luna and Leo, Carla approached her. "Mom. Can we talk?" asked Carla. "Sure. I'll be back." said Carmen as they went to speak. "What is it?" asked Carmen. "Kayla. She's back." said Carla as Carmen's eyes widened. "A-Are you sure?" she asked. "Yes." said Carla as she and Carmen head to the lab, where Carmen explained everything. "Years ago, we were a normal family. Carla and Kayla were close and we were happy. But when me and my husband had an argument. We had our divorce and I tried to gain custody of both Carla and Kayla. But I was only able to gain custody of Carla but her father took Kayla in his custody and that was the last time we saw her." said Carmen as she slowly shed tears. "Since then...we did everything we could to find her. But there was not trace and we gave up." said Carla. "Do you think she's coming here?" asked Mei. "I don't know. But I have the wolves on high alert." said Chris as all wolves were on overwatch at the walls and on the mountains. Meanwhile, Carla walked into the den, into her bedroom, where she looks into her drawer and pulls out an old photo of her and Kayla when they were kids.

*Flashback: Many years ago*

In a small neighborhood, Kayla was at the playground, playing in the sandbox with her toys. Suddenly, a boy came and kicked her toys away from her and shoved her to the ground. Kayla had a look of fear until suddenly Carla came in and shoved the boy away, forcing him to retreat. "You okay?" asked Carla as she held her hand out. "I'm fine. Thank you." said Kayla as the sisters shared a hug.
