And then canceled my plans just in case you'd call

-Alexa, Hailey and Grace are Augustine's best friends. Her nickname is August.

~Augustine POV~

"OMG I love this song!" I scream at Alexa who's pouring drinks as I exit the pool. She hands me a glass and I go sit next to Hailey and Grace on a pool chair. I watch them take a sip from their own glasses and immediately make disgusted faces. Me and Alexa start laughing and I take a sip too. I almost spit it out when I yell "what did you put in this?! How much?!" I put my hand over my mouth in disgust.

Alexa starts laughing and tries to fake innocence when she she says "too strong? Sorry, I accidentally poured to much vodka in" she raises both her shoulder "honest mistake". "Yeah right!" Grace yells, still in a disgusted voice.

I go into the house to grab my phone and see I have a missed call from James. "August leave your phone and come outside!" I hear Alexa yell at me from the pool and I look back to see her trying to take on Grace who's on Hailey's shoulders in a very unfair game of chicken. "Just a sec!" I yell back and call James back.

J: "hey"

A: "Hi, you called me?"

J: "yeah. I know it's kind of late but do you maybe want to go on a late-night ice cream run?"

A: "uh-"

"Come on I can't do this alone!" Alexa yells at me again.

J: "shit am I interrupting something?"

A: "No, not at all! I'm just at Alexa's for girls night so I can't tonight..."

I hear him moving on the other end of the line.

A: "but that sounds really nice so maybe another night?"

J: "yeah yeah sure! Have fun!"

A: "thanks. Good night"

J: "good night"

Then he hangs up.

I go outside just as Alexa pulls on Grace's leg and she falls into the water and they all start laughing. "who was that? Your new boyfriend?" Hailey says sarcastically. "wait is James your boyfriend now? And doesn't he have a girlfriend back home?" Grace says as she pushes hair out her face. I enter the pool and say "it was James, but I don't think he's my boyfriend. I mean he kind of is, but we just haven't talked about it yet." "well you better talk about it soon! you've been hanging out for like three weeks!" Alexa states. I splash water at her "And he sort of has a girlfriend back home, but they haven't talked all summer. So maybe they broke up?" I explain.

That's what he told me, and what I've been telling myself to try and convince myself that what I'm doing is not completely wrong and violating every girl code law.

~The next day~

"Girl are you really not coming?" Hailey complains on Facetime "yeah.. sorry. I think I ate something bad. But enjoy the movie! And don't let Alexa drink too much 'cause then she complains she has to miss the movie for bathroom breaks." "I can hear you August!" Alexa speaks and Hailey points the camera towards her. "feel better! Byeee" Grace is waving at the screen "Bye!" I respond and hang up.

Am I actually sick? No. but am I going to tell my best friends I'm canceling on them IN CASE a certain BOY calls so I'm free? Also no.

An hour had past and still no call from James. I was starting to regret not going the movie with my friends... did I really do that for a boy? Wow.

And just like sign from the universe I get a call from him.

I go to pick up but then decide to wait 5 more seconds so I don't seem too desperate.

1...2...345 "hey James!"

J: "hey, how are are?"

A: "I'm good, you?"

J: "yeah good. Um..."

I can hear him contemplating whether or not to speak

J: "do you want to hang out?"

I make a success gesture with my arms and then try to contain my excitement.

A: "yeah I would love to!"

J: "Meet me behind the mall?"

A: "sure. I'll be there"
