DILARA SWEARS SHE can sense the fact that there's going to be a shift in her recent normality before it happens. practically since she woke up this morning, something inside of her stomach churned whenever she thought about going about her day and it most certainly wasn't a reminder of her hunger or anything of that sort. she's been trying her best to avoid it, pretend it's just her mind playing tricks on her but the hairs on her neck stand just that little bit more upright and her heart seems to be hammering the slightest rhythm faster. despite her desire to avoid it, she can't seem to escape it, even as she walks around in the cold winter air.
her earmuffs cover her ears as the chill in the atmosphere sends a shudder through her body. her eyes remain on the bare trees, secretly wishing for the leaves to become a dear friend to the tall plants one more. it's a nice coldness today, one that doesn't settle horrifyingly in her bones but she's not sure that even matters with the chills cursing through her at the prospect of something bad happening.
and then, it's as though every seed of anticipation growing inside of her makes sense because her phone begins to ring. the call itself isn't what startles her, more so the contact that flashes across her screen, staring back at her near mockingly. she blinks twice and then a few more times, wondering if her eyes are foolishly playing a joke but the more she blinks, the more prominent the name becomes.
she almost doesn't answer it, the concoction of confusion and pain brewing inside of her steering her clear of the other end of the call. she almost shuts her phone off entirely and acts as though she isn't seeing what she is and that the ringing in her ears is exactly that, some mindless ringing she need not pay attention to. but she's weak and her self respect crumples faster than ever at the thought of just hearing his voice once more.
she swipes the answer button just before the call cuts and she hears a breath of relief on the other end. it almost knocks her off her feet because it's strangely the first bit of contact she's had with matt in what feels like forever. the reality is it's only been a little over a week but as the days passed, it felt like time was stuck in an exhausting loop that she finally escapes when the sound of his voice reaches her ears.
"lars?" it hits her with far more impact than needs be and she inhales slowly, allowing the nickname to roll between her ears until she's sure she won't stumble on her words when she answers him.
"remembered i exist finally?" her tone is laced in a protective manner, her way of preserving herself from the hurt he's caused her that she doesn't think can be healed with simple rubbing alcohol or bandaids.
