Sophia quickly accepted the news of being a witch and a month after the letter arrived she decided to go to Diagon Alley without her parents, this is something she has to do on her own. Her parents agree to give her the money to get what she needs.
Following the directions she's been given, she ends up at Leadenhall Market, Gracechurch, London. She's looking for a place called the Leaky Cauldron but for the life of her, she can't see it. She was about to give up when she heard a girl telling her parents they had to go through the Leaky Cauldron to get to Diagon Alley.
She turns around to see a bushy-haired girl heading for an alley with her parents. Taking a leap of faith Sophia decides to ask her, "Excuse me," She calls hesitantly going over to them.
They turn to look at her, "Are you lost?" The older woman asks, she must be the girl's mother.
The lost feeling she feels must have been reflected on her face, "Um... I'm sorry I didn't mean to eavesdrop but I overheard you saying that you know how to get to Diagon Alley. I'm trying to get there myself but this is all very new to me and I'm lost."
The girl eyes her suspiciously so Sophia gets out her Hogwarts letter and shows it to her, "Have my passport if you need me to prove who I am?"
The girl finally smiles, "You're a muggleborn?"
Sophia frowns, "A what?"
She giggles, "A witch or wizard that is born to none magic parents is called a muggleborn, then there are half-bloods who have just one parent who is magic and then there are the purebloods. Are you here alone?"
She's not sure if she should stay, she doesn't know if that's true until she knows who her family is, but for now, she needs help, "Yes I am, I need to be able to do things on my own since my parents won't be around from September and they don't understand it. I only found out I was a witch last month, will you help me, please?" She doesn't want to beg but she's desperate for this life to work.
"Of course, we should introduce ourselves. I'm Hermione Ganger and you are?"
"Nice to meet you, I'm Sophia May," Hermione leads her down an alleyway to a pub. From afar the sign looks blank but as they get closer it reads 'The Leaky Cauldron' She realises it must be magic.
Inside is dark, and shabby and there's a strong smell of beer but her eyes are drawn to the people around her, they're all using magic for even the simplest of tasks. She can't believe her eyes, she doesn't know the first thing about magic and maybe one day she could be using it as easily as she breaths.
Realising she has stopped Hermione gently grabs Sophia's wrist pulling her along. They head through the pub and out the back into a little courtyard, "How are you not as awestruck by this as I am?" She asked her.
Hermione sighs, "Oh I am but I don't want to stand out."
"Why?"
"I'm guessing you don't know yet. Muggles and muggleborns aren't accepted by all levels of the wizarding world. Like in our world there are those that think us beneath them because we are not purebloods," Her explanation reminds Sophia that she may be new to all this but if she wants to fit in she needs to learn quickly and blend in until she knows enough to face this world alone.
Hermione tapes out a sequence on the brick in front of them and the walls part revealing a crowded street lined with shops. Remembering what she had said Sophia keeps her awe inside, "Thank you for grounding me. I guess I got a little over-excited."
"That's okay, believe me, I feel the same way. Did you want to shop with us?"
"If you don't mind but I'm guessing that there's a different currency here and I only have English currency on me."
