Climbing the stairs into the castle the first-year students stop at the top of the final set of stairs before a tall, stern-looking woman in green robes and a pointy hat.
"Welcome to Hogwarts, I am Professor McGonagall. In a few moments you will pass through these doors and join your classmates," She pointed to the large double doors behind her, "Before you can take your seats you must be sorted into your houses. There's Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw and Slytherin. While you're here your house will be like your family, triumphs will earn you points, any rule-breaking and you will lose points. At the end of the year, the house with the most points will receive the house cup..."
"Trevor!!!" Neville pushes forward to a toad that is sitting by Professor McGonagall's feet, "Sorry," He moves back into the crowd realising he had interrupted her everyone giggling around him.
McGonagall sighs, "The sorting ceremony will begin momentarily," She walks away into the hall.
"So it's true then," A voice spoke over everyone. The voice belongs to a blonde-haired boy who stood next to the pillar to their left, "What they're saying on the train? Harry Potter has come to Hogwarts," The boy moved to stand in front of Harry, "I'm Malfoy, Draco Malfoy."
Ron sniggers at his name. "Think my names funny do you? No need to ask for yours, red hair and a hand-me-down robe. You must be a Weasley. You'll find that some wizarding families are better than others, Potter," He sneers at Ron, "You don't want to be making friends with the wrong sort, I can help you there," Draco hold his hand out for Harry too shake but Harry turns it down sticking by Ron annoying Draco greatly.
Professor McGonagall comes back and taps Draco on the shoulder gesturing him back to his place. Sophia immediately doesn't like him, he must be one of the purebloods Hermione spoke of, "We're ready for you now, follow me."
The first years are led into the Great Hall in two lines, she can't help but awe at the ceiling, "It's not real the ceiling, it's just bewitched to look like the night sky," Hermione tells her.
They stop in front of the teacher's table and in front of that there is a stool with an old hat on it. Professor Dumbledore gives a few start-of-term announcements before the sorting ceremony begins.
"When I call your name, you will come forth and I will place the sorting hat on your head and you will be sorted into your houses," Professor McGonagall starts calling out names.
"Hermione Ganger," Hermione looks at Sophia whispering, "Friends no matter what?"
Sophia smiles nodding, "No matter what."
She sits on the stool with the hat on her head, it mutters to itself having a look inside her mind for information, "Gryffindor!" It shouts and the house table cheers, Hermione grins racing over to the Gryffindor table.
Draco is next and the hat hardly touches his head before it shouts, "Slytherin!"
"There's never been a witch or wizard who went bad that wasn't in Slytherin," she overheard Ron say to Harry since they're stood in front of her.
There's a few more names then, "Sophia May!"
Her heart pounds as she sits on the stool the Professor places the hat on her hat, "Hmm... interesting, very interesting. An absence of knowledge about your past, thirst for that knowledge and a strive to fit in but an even bigger determination to stand by your morals," He pauses and for a moment she didn't think it was going to sort her, "Slytherin!"
Her pounding heart sinks, she slowly gets up off the stool and heads for the Slytherin table, they aren't cheering or clasping. Her eyes drift over to Hermione who looks just as shocked as Sophia. She can feel the entire hall staring at her, they must know somehow that she is a muggleborn.
She kept her eyes dead set on Hermione but she not actually seeing her, her mind drifts as the ceremony continues. She comes back to reality when Dumbledore announces the start of the feast. The lids on the silver platters in front of them disappear revealing a vast array of foods, but for the second time that day, Sophia hardly eats a thing.
Hermione catches her line of sight again, she looks at her friend concerned so Sophia just gives her a quick tight-lipped smile.
The girl to Sophia's left elbows her lightly whispering, "Are you alright?" She is also blonde, she continues when Sophia doesn't answer, "I'm Daphne Greengrass."
She found her voice, though it wasn't very loud, "Sophia May." Daphne realises she's not in a talkative mood so she turns away starting a conversation with the girl on the other side of her, or she quickly remembers who Sophia is. She's glad of it though, she wants to make friends but right now her mind is too stunned to process it properly.
Surveying the room her eyes lock with Dumbledore for a moment but she shifts her gaze along the teacher's table stopping on a moody-looking man in fully black robes and black hair. She realises he's already staring back at her so once again she looks away letting her mind drift as she slowly eats a few bits and pieces, her hunger growing over her sick feeling.
When the feast is over the Slyterin prefect leads the first years down to the dungeons where the Slytherin common room and dormitories are located. She curls her nose up at the password but takes a mental note of it anyway.
They are directed to their dorms and she follows the other girls into the room. There are five beds lining the walls two on each side and then one at the head of the room, she sees her trunk at the end of one of the beds and Apollo's carry case on the bed. Sophia lets him out and he stretches before curling up on her pillow. The only upside to being in Slytherin is Sophia loves green and the bedsheets and drapes are a lovely deep shade of green.
"I hope that thing doesn't have fleas and he better not hurt my owl," She turns from her trunk looking for the source of the voice. There are four other girls: two dark-haired, one brunette and one blonde.
The voice came from one of the dark-haired girls with an upturned noise at the head bed, "He's a perfectly tame cat, no fleas. I had him checked not two days ago and if he was bothered by your owl, he would be on him already."
"Ignore Pansy, what's his name?" Daphne asks from the bed to her right.
"Apollo."
Pansy wasn't finished though and she stood right in front of Sophia, "What was your name again?"
"Sophia May."
"Well, I'm Pansy Parkinson and if you touch any of my stuff I'll have you expelled."
The other dark-haired girl steps forward from the bed opposite Sophia's, "Leave her alone, Pansy."
"But she's a muggleborn!" Pansy protests.
"Pansy's right, we shouldn't be talking to her," The brunette steps forward from the final bed opposite Daphne's bed.
Daphne comes to her defence, "The sorting hat obviously put her in this house for a reason so back off both of you."
Pansy sneers at Sophia and then goes back to her bed, the other dark-haired girl steps forward again, "I'm Tracey Davis and that's Millicent," She points to the brunette.
She feels a lot more at ease knowing she might be in with the chance of two friends or allies at least, "Pleasure and thank you for that."
"No problem as Daphne said you must be here for a reason, the sorting hat doesn't make the decision lightly," She went back to her trunk.
Since it's late she finds her night stuff and heads to the bathroom to get changed, it's only as she's getting changed that she notices her robes have changed to adorn the Slytherin colours.
She brushes her long hair before scooping Apollo off her pillow and climbs under the covers putting Apollo at the end of her bed where he makes himself comfy.
The other girls go through a similar routine, getting into bed themselves and before long they are all asleep.
She lies there for a while, staring at the ceiling until Apollo moves to lie next to her. She pulls him into a cuddle, kissing his head and falls asleep.
