I laid in the darkness, my eyes on the ceiling. I couldn't sleep. I still had mixed emotions from my day keeping me awake.

Suddenly, the person on the bed next to my tapped my arm. I turned to see...Adair. "Can't sleep?" they whispered.

"Yeah." I mutter.

"Me too."

We laid in the darkness, in awkward silence.

"You're non-binary, right?" I asked suddenly.

"Yeah, why?"

"So, you could pick which type of training you want."

"Yup."

"Why the males' section?" I asked.

"Besides the fact that it's better? I always wanted to learn karate, defense skills, etc. Just never got the chance."

I thought for some time. "So, you have to look like a guy, for it to work?"

"I could look like a girl, but I just thought that this way is easier." Adair mumbled the last part.

"Easier how?"

"Easier to get along with the other boys."

I let out a singular ha! "No chance for that to happen to me."

"Well, we got along well." Adair pointed out.

"You're not really a boy."

"True."

"But, who cares about them?" I asked. "They suck."

Adair chuckled. "You are brutal."

"Just telling the truth."

We stopped talking and soon, I quickly went to sleep. Before I fell asleep, I realized that I finally had a friend.

The next day, in the girls' bathroom, I changed into a purple shirt, workout pants, and shoes. I tied my hair in a ponytail and exited the stall, only to run into Cass again.

I jumped back. "Hey." I mumble.

"Hi." I observed her outfit, which seemed amazingly small and tight.

She caught me eyeing her outfit. "Seducing skills." she exclaimed. "You're not missing out on much."

I nodded and quickly left the bathroom, trying so hard not to blush.

I went to the training area, where Mr. Grayson was just about to explain the day's lesson. "Defense and offense moves today." he said. "Pick a partner and fight. I'll be walking around, suggesting moves to you. At the end, we'll have a big contest with everyone. Have fun!"

Adair quickly went up to me. I nodded before they could even ask. And then, we were fighting, although, not as rough as we were the day before.

Mr. Grayson suggested many improvements to Adair, which made them a better fighter quickly. Good thing I was also getting better.

At the end of the day, Mr. Grayson assigned me to fight Chad of all people. "Good luck." Chad said, smirking.

"You too." I said, right before I charged at him.

I beat him in under three minutes, pinning his arm to his back and twisting it. "Ow, ow, ow!" he yelled. "Okay, okay, you win!"

I let go and followed everyone else to the kitchen. Adair and I sat next to each other. "You beat him bad!" Adair exclaimed, laughing.

"I know!"

Just then, a couple of girls walked in. One of them being Cass. "We need extra napkins." Cass said to Mr. Grayson.

I watched her as Mr. Grayson handed her some napkins. "Have a crush?" Adair said as the girls left the kitchen.

"What?" I asked.

"You were staring at her for a long time." they laughed.

I elbowed his ribs. "Yeah, yeah, good observation, Sherlock." I said. "You better not tell anyone."

"Who will I tell?" Adair asked. "So, what move are you going to make on her?"

I elbowed them once again as he was howling in laughter. "Next topic, please."

We talked about our past lives. I learned that they lived as a foster child their whole life, ever since their parents died in a car crash. They've been bouncing around foster homes in Maine until the RDA called him up.

I told them about the orphanage in Kansas, and how I was abandoned there as a baby. Then, a couple years later, I was called by the RDA.

We finished up our food, then headed to the sleeping area, and slept. The next day, we did the same.

We continued this schedule everyday, for a year, learning different fighting skills and learning more about the Na'vi.

And then came the day that would change our lives forever.
