The Device

We were practicing sparing when Mr. Grayson came in.

By then, there was only a handful of us left, as many boys failed many lessons. Adair and I were still there, along with Chad. I kept seeing Cass everyday, so I figured she was passing her lessons.

Although, how hard is seducing someone?

"Boys...and girl." Mr. Grayson added, seeing me. "Freeze for a moment. I have an important announcement."

Adair and I stopped and looked at Mr. Grayson. "Next week, you'll be sent to Pandora and to the RDA center."

I stared at him in shock. I already knew that that would happen, but I didn't know that it would happen this quickly. I felt as if I just got to the training center just yesterday.

Mr. Grayson clapped his hands to get the attention of everyone back to him. "I'm proud of you all and will miss you, but please, don't think about me and enjoy your mission. Now, continue practicing."

I turned back to Adair. "It's already time?" I asked.

They nodded. "Yup."

"Wow."

"Time flies."

Tell me about it.

That night, Mr. Grayson called me and Adair. "We have a new device that could help humans breathe Pandora air, and we want you two to test it." he explained.

"Why us?" Adair asked.

"You two have the highest marks and you two seem to be tough enough to fight off anything the device would give you. Although, it shouldn't be giving you anything except the ability to breathe on Pandora."

"Wait." I said. "The device could kill us?"

"Not kill, but infect." Mr. Grayson said. "But, the decision is up to you. Do you want it?"

I turned to Adair. They shrugged. "Why not?" they asked.

"I guess I'll take it." I said.

Mr. Grayson beamed. "Perfect."

"Wait." Adair said. "What about the marks? I mean, which one of us has the highest."

"Oh, yeah!" I exclaimed.

Mr. Grayson laughed and then walked away, us following. "We're serious, dude!" I said.

"Both of you are equally good."

"Not a good enough answer!" Adair said. "I need to prove to Willow that I'm better."

"No, I'm better!"

That night, Mr. Grayson injected the device, a small chip, into our throats, which led us to practically dance with pain. "It will wear off." Mr. Grayson said.

I rubbed my neck. "Sure." I mutter.

Eventually, the pain did wear off, and soon, we were standing right in front of a rocket. "Good luck." I said to Adair.

"Good luck." they said back.

And then, we were sealed into our cryo-capsule, and frozen solid for the next six years.
