The sound of a loud thud was followed by hurried footsteps. James Carter, with a grim face, entered and pushed away the two embracing each other. He then swung a kick at Mark Johnson, sending him flying against the wall before crashing down.
Lily watched in fear, having never seen this side of James. Afraid that it might lead to something fatal, she exclaimed, "James, stop it, you might kill someone."
Hearing Lily, a weakened Mark spoke, "Lily, don't beg him. I'd rather be beaten to death by him than see you humiliated like this."
James scoffed, "Such a devoted couple." After a glance at Lily, he turned to Chris Cloud and coldly commanded, "Throw Lily out of the hospital. Any hospital that dares to admit her will be opposing me." He then turned and left.
"James!" Lily's call was in vain.
Chris, taken aback, glanced at Lily but had no time to speak and hurriedly followed James.
Lily collapsed to the ground, tears gushing out uncontrollably. He had misunderstood again; he never believed her.
"Lily," Mark struggled to help her up despite his pain.
"Get away! Don't touch me!" Lily weakly flailed her arms, "Mark, why do you have to do this? You know very well nothing happened between us!"
"Lily, you're breaking my heart. If it's because James is here, you can't admit it, I understand. But now it's just the two of us, why can't you admit it?"
"Lily, tell me, have you changed your heart? Didn't you tell me before that marrying James was just to get half of his wealth in the divorce, so we could have a better life? Now that James doesn't want you, don't you want me either?"
Mark's words painted Lily as a vain and heartless woman who saw relationships as mere stepping stones.
Before Lily could respond, a voice at the door made her turn in panic, "Mr. He, do we still need to check your wife's condition?"
Seeing James return, Lily's heart sank. He stood at the door, face dark as if holding back an erupting volcano.
Then came his cold voice, "Stop all treatment for Lily, throw her out, and no hospital or even small clinic is to treat her, or they'll be defying me."
Chris, understanding the implications, looked at Lily with sympathy and replied softly, "Yes."
Before leaving, James gave Lily and Mark one last icy look, his black eyes freezing them in place. He had hoped to give her one last chance to explain, only to hear this harsh truth.
So, her agreement to marry him was for this reason.
In the car, James closed his bloodshot eyes, thinking, 'Divorce and be with Mark? In your dreams!'
"I'll never divorce!" he thought determinedly.
"Chris," James's voice made Chris tremble.
"President."
"I want Johnson Corporation gone from City A within three days. Do they think they can challenge me? They should weigh their worth first."
Chris glanced at James through the rearview mirror, seeing him with closed eyes, "This..."
"What? Can't do it?" James opened his eyes, his mood worsening at Chris's hesitant look.
"It's not that. I know what to do," Chris replied, worried about the unnecessary trouble it might cause and the growing distance between James and Lily, but he chose to remain silent.
