James Carter finally found Lily's phone under the passenger seat. The screen was shattered, but luckily it still worked. He immediately called Chris Cloud to explain the situation and asked him to arrange help.
After hanging up, James Carter let out a slight sigh of relief. However, the sight of the lifeless Lily made his heart sink again. He dared not move her, fearing he might cause further injury.
Twenty minutes later, the sound of a helicopter could be heard overhead. Lily and James Carter were airlifted to safety.
Watching the closed doors of the operating room, James Carter paced anxiously outside. Having completed the necessary procedures, Chris Cloud approached him with concern, "Mr. Carter, you should get your wounds treated first. I'll watch over Mrs. Carter."
James Carter spun around and stared at Chris Cloud, "Find out what happened. I don't believe this was an accident." He had just left for the company when this incident occurred. He couldn't believe it was a mere coincidence.
"We've already started investigating," Chris Cloud assured him, noting James Carter's dishevelled and blood-stained appearance. "Please, get yourself treated."
"No, I'll stay here. Just inform me immediately if there's any news." James Carter's only concern was for Lily; he paid no heed to his injuries.
"Alright," Chris Cloud, knowing James Carter's character well, didn't press further.
An hour later, Lily was wheeled out of the operating room. James Carter, holding her hand tightly against his cheek, looked at her pale, weak face.
The next afternoon, Lily finally regained consciousness. She felt something pressing down on her hand and looked over to see a stranger holding it, asleep at her bedside. The man was covered in blood, his hair and face dirty and messy.
Startled, Lily quickly pulled back her hand and sat up, gripping the blanket tightly and looking at the man in terror.
James Carter woke up to her movements. Seeing her curled up in the corner of the bed like a frightened kitten, he said, "Lily, you're awake."
"Don't come near me!" Lily cried out, hitting him with a pillow.
"Lily, listen to me. Nothing happened between me and Emma Wilson; it was all her trying to seduce me," James Carter hurriedly explained, thinking she was still angry about that incident.
"I don't know what you're talking about. I don't know you; stay away," Lily said, using the pillow as a shield while cautiously watching his every move.
This response shocked James Carter. "You don't remember me?" He asked in disbelief.
Lily gazed at him intently, then asked, "Who are you?"
James Carter's heart sank. He quickly got up and shouted for a doctor. The doctor arrived and, after examining Lily at James Carter's insistence, found that she had suffered a brain injury resulting in temporary memory loss.
James Carter's gaze on Lily was heavy and concerned, but he said nothing more, dismissed the doctor, and closed the door. Turning back, he saw Lily defensively eyeing him, his heart aching with sorrow.
