From the first glance she gave him upon waking, he knew.
He understood Lily. After her amnesia, Lily's eyes were always clear and innocent, filled with love for him, unlike now, filled with stories.
Although she hid her sadness well, her eyes never lied. She couldn't be indifferent and act as if nothing had happened.
He had imagined countless scenarios of Lily's heart-wrenching breakdown and collapse upon regaining her memories, but he never expected such calmness.
In a corner where James Carter couldn't see, Lily lay with her eyes open, letting tears fall.
She resented Mark Johnson. If it weren't for his provocation, she wouldn't have recalled those painful memories she had intentionally forgotten. Then, she and James Carter could have continued living happily as if nothing had happened.
But alas, not all good things in the world could be hers.
She didn't know how to face James Carter. He had personally killed their child, and his suspicions and distrust led to their current situation.
She knew James Carter became like this because of his deep love for her, but she couldn't overcome this hurdle. She couldn't step over their child's corpse and live happily with him.
She remembered what James Carter and Emma Wilson did in the room that day. Thinking back, they hadn't undressed completely, their clothes still on, not going all the way. Considering James Carter's love for her, he couldn't betray her. The reason for that scene might have to be asked of Emma Wilson.
Emma Wilson had schemed against James Carter, aiming to marry into wealth and replace her as Mrs Carter. The entire act was performed for her to see.
And later, Emma Wilson deliberately tried to explain to her, correctly guessing she would meet her, having arranged for someone to kill her.
She couldn't believe that Emma Wilson would go to such lengths to marry into wealth.
Since Emma Wilson didn't cherish their past relationship for the sake of marrying into wealth, Lily didn't need to show her any mercy anymore. She would make Emma Wilson pay back what she owed.
Lily stayed awake all night, thinking about recent events, not knowing when she eventually fell asleep.
When she woke up again, she smelled a delicious aroma.
"Awake? I made your favourite seafood porridge; want some?" James Carter quickly put down his financial newspaper and asked Lily.
"Mhm."
James Carter raised the hospital bed and served Lily a bowl of seafood porridge.
"I need to go back to the company for a while. Chris Cloud will stay here to take care of you. If you need anything, ask him. I'll come back as soon as I'm done."
"Go ahead with your work; I can manage independently."
James Carter touched Lily's cheek and smiled softly.
After Lily finished the porridge and he had cleaned up, he left.
With Lily alone in the room and Chris Cloud outside, the crisp sound of his keyboard was audible to her.
"Chris Cloud."
"Mrs. Carter." Chris Cloud quickly appeared in her room.
"I'd like an apple."
"I'll go buy one for you now."
After Chris Cloud left, the room finally quieted down.
Looking at the barren tree branches outside the window, Lily remembered that City A had already entered winter.
The indoor heating gave her an illusion of autumn, as comfortable as her seemingly harmonious relationship with James Carter. But the truth was, it was all self-deception.
Once that veil is pierced, the illusion ceases to exist.
The door opened with a "click."
Lily was surprised. How could Chris Cloud be back so soon?
But when she turned her head, she saw a person wrapped up tightly. It wasn't until the person pulled off their face mask that she saw clearly—it was Emma Wilson!
