"Foster? Pancakes?" Sophie snapped out of her daze, dropping the fork that she was using to poke around her hash browns.
"Yeah, um, sorry. Pancakes sound great!" she told Keefe, tugging on her eyelashes.
Keefe stalked closer to where Sophie was sitting at the dining table-for-two.
"You've been really out of it lately. Sure you're okay, Foster? And don't say 'I'm fine' and then deny that you're the Mysterious Miss F." He smirked after the last line but Sophie could hear the concern when he asked if she was okay.
"I'm sure. No, no, for real!" Sophie quickly added when Keefe raised an eyebrow.
"Sure, the Mysterious Miss F," Keefe chuckled. He took Sophie's hand. "But, if you do need anything, and I mean ANYTHING-"Sophie cut him off before he could finish. "I know, I know, you're here for me," she squeezed his hand a little tighter.
Sophie didn't notice it was shaking until Keefe told her "Woah-there IS something. And don't even TRY to deny it, Foster."
Sophie sighed and asked the gods under her breath, "Oh why? Why—out of ALL the abilities out there, did my boyfriend have to manifest as an Empath?"
Sadly, the gods didn't answer.
"It's nothing-" she stopped mid-sentence when Keefe leaned in closer, raising an eyebrow. "It's just," she whispered the last part: "What if-what if, Lady Gisela's coming for you, Keefe? You escaped! We can't just pretend this is all over-we can't just pretend it's all okay-"
"It's-I know Foster," Keefe looked at his feet, tearing a hand through his hair. "My mom's a psycho but I'll never let her hurt you again. Never." Keefe started tearing up and that made Sophie stand up and she hugged him.
Keefe let Sophie bury her face into his shoulder as they held to each other like they were the last people on earth.
"You did nothing wrong Keefe. And we'll get through this together. But we need to get to school! Mr. Forkle said he left human clothing and backpacks and stuff." Sophie muffled into his shoulder before pulling away.
Sophie jogged up to her room and Keefe went up to his. That's when she realized that she hadn't worn human clothes in 3 years!
She opened her closet door and searched for something comfortable for her first day at school . . . In 3 years? Wow . . . time had flown by.
Sophie searched through the closet, tossing around clothes to find what looked like something no one would make fun of her for wearing. She finally found a white spaghetti strap crop top and frayed, faded blue jean shorts.
Not bad, Sophie thought. She looked for a water bottle and found an iris blue tumbler with a handle and Stanley 1913® engraved onto it. Huh, looks cool. Sophie held it in her hand, gripping her fingers around the grip-pad.
Imparter! Oh wait, you can't exactly bring a hologram cube to school. Talk about awkward. But there was a phone with a cream colored case on it.
Sophie slung the Jansport® backpack over her shoulder and ran down to the living room with her phone and tumbler clutched in each of her hands.
And then she ran into Keefe. Not physically, but almost. They both stopped in shock, checking the other out.
Keefe was wearing a white t-shirt and black shorts, with a black Nike backpack slung over his back. What could Sophie say?
He was . . . hot.
"Wow Foster you look-" Keefe mumbled, and then smirked, "You look hotter than anyone I've ever seen. Not that anyone could even come close to you," He walked up to Sophie and cupped her cheek. "They really can't."
Sophie blushed as they both put on their socks and tennis shoes. Keefe hopped into the driver's seat as she sat next to him and Keefe started driving down the road.
"So our first session-"
"Period." Sophie corrected. "Nobody calls it a session."
Keefe smirked. "Okay. But we're ditching, right?"
"You can, Keefe. But I won't." Keefe whined when Sophie said that.
"Awwwwww, but Foster, think of all the fun things we could do together." Sophie raised an eyebrow at Keefe.
"What do you mean...fun?" Sophie asked, clearly still oblivious. Keefe smirked, raising an eyebrow too.
"I think you know what I mean. But, if you want to be oblivious, go right ahead, Foster. The only way you'll find out is ditching with me." Keefe said, clicking his tongue when Sophie crossed her arms.
She bit her lip, really wanting to find out what he meant. "There's another way to do...whatever you mean. There are passing periods. 10 minutes in between sessions." Keefe nodded.
"Sounds good Foster." He parked the car in the student parking lot and Sophie and Keefe walked inside the school.
It was technically their first day, so Sophie was nervous and she hoped Keefe wasn't as nervous. But him being the cool, snarky person he is, he probably wasn't.
They had lockers next to each other. And of course, as soon as they went to their homeroom, all the girls started gaping at Keefe.
Sophie sighed.
This was going to be a long day.
A/N Omg, I'm so sorry for not posting for so long and now since I'm also writing "Can it be?" which you should totally check out if you haven't already! I'm getting back into the swing of writing and hope you love the chapter!
