The heavy uptempo hip-hop and dance-pop track, permeated the studio as Aamaira bobbed her head to the instrumentation that was a clear callback to marching bands associated with many HBCUs across America. Aamaira had felt drawn to this percussion-led track which was primarily a minimal beat produced by a drum machine when she first heard it. Initially when she had heard the song she had felt it had a different sound, with the effects of drums in its backing track, and was nothing like the mainstream K-pop sound. Now here she was weeks later with Bobby as her right hand as she and her groupmates recording a song."Tell me who gonna stop me from chasing the paper! Been grinding so damn hard for this cheddar!" Taeseong chants into the mic from inside the booth. "My tax brackets go up all the way up. Multiplying by the second!"
Aamaira frowns. His cadence did not sound like she envisioned in her head. Touching Bobby lightly on his shoulder, she spoke softly. "I think we should stop."
Bobby nods. Halting everything.
"Is everything okay?" Taeseong asks.
Aamaira rubs her hands over her face. "Okay, so it's like this. How it sounds in my head sonically I'm not getting that vibe now, if that makes sense. I want it to be like a chant." She explains. She waved her hands as she spoke. "With a little sass. That demanding spunk."
Taeseong blinks and scratches his head. "Maybe I'm not built for opening this track."
"In my head you are. So we just need to put in the work. We'll get it." Aamaira responds.
Standing she walks around her members, pulling her bucket cap lower she walks into the booth, joining Taeseong.
"I'm just gonna go through it with you. Get the tones right and then we can go back to recording." She states as she steps into Taeseong's personal space.
"So it's like," Aamaira licks her lips as she points her finger in an accusatory manner at him and chants. "'Tell me whose gonna stop me from chasing the paper!' Can you try that?"
"Tell me who's gonna stop me from chasing the paper!" Taeseong mimics her. But his rendition felt flat.
"No, no." Aamaira shakes her head. "One more time."
Taeseong nods once. "Tell me who's gonna stop me from chasing the paper!"
"Straighten your back. Now apply depth to your voice and say it."
"Tell me who's gonna stop me from chasing the paper!"
"It's like you got no thug in you oppa!" Aamaira sets her hands akimbo. "Where's that spunk that roughness."
"Maira, I grew up in Seoul, South Korea. To a conglomerate in a gated community, what would I know about being a hoodlum?" Taeseong blinks at her.
"You can't even fake it?" Aamaira asks. "I need that spunk Tae. It's not that hard. Think about it like this. You're cornered by some assholes and you rise to show them who is alpha. Can you do that for me? Does what I say even make sense?"
Taeseong nods. "In a way, I get what you mean. Just don't say that again."
Aamaira bounces on her feet excitedly. "Okay great! Again!"
