KAGISO

I got a call that I need to rush to the hospital by Aza. I wasn’t expecting such when I walked in.

Me: What happened to you?

He blows out a sigh.

Sandile: Aza happened.

Me: I don’t think I’m following. What did she do?

He narrates everything and by the time his done I’m rolling on the floor in laughter.

Me: On a serious note why are you still talking to that woman?

Sandile: She called using a different number.

Me: I told you to sort her out a long time ago but you kept giving her chances. Tell me why is she still alive? Woman like her don’t give up no matter how much you try to scare them. The only language they understand is death that you mean business.

Sandile: Bullet is on it.

Me: You better kill her this time because she will do far worse that what she already did.

I chuckle.

Me: I saw the Mrs on the corridors and she looks beyond herself.

Sandile: As she should. That woman just brings the worst in me.

Me: Remember her ex? She was arrested with her friend for beating him.

Sandile: You mean friends.

I frown.

Me: Weren’t they two?

Sandile: They were three.

Me: Who is the third one?

Sandile: Remember when we went to her workplace to buy that company.

I nod.

Sandile: The lady who wanted to talk you by the elevator but you brushes her off.

Me: That crazy woman who keeps stalking me?

Sandile: She’s stalking you?

Me: She was but stopped when I paid her off. She was getting under my skin and every time I saw her I just blow up.

Sandile: Well she’s the friend.

Me: They are not close.

Sandile: It’s another story for another day. I’m just keeping her alive because she’s her friends.

Me: You see this energy you’re having on her should have been the energy you put on that woman.

Sandile: I’m sure by the end of today her family will be crying for her.

Me: That’s your problem. Why do you trust people to do the job for you instead of doing it yourself? What if Bullet betrays you?

Sandile: Bullet will never do that. We…

I cut him off.

Me: We come far with him. Yes, I know but you don’t know what tommorrow holds.

Sandile: I would have done the job but that crazy woman decided to break my leg.

I laugh.

Me: Stop provoking her.

Sandile: She should also stop provoking me.

I shake my head and raise my hands in surrender. I’m not going to get involved because this could back fire in my face someday. I know they will eventually fix things in there own way and where would that leave me, the mediator? I just wish they could sit down and talk like normal people do not that nonsense they keep doing. I’m sensing to bull in one kraal kind of vibe on them and it never works. I just hope they fix their issues because they do look good together.

SANDILE

Kagiso left after the nurse walked in to check my vitals. The door opens and the she devil walks in.

Me: What fuck are you doing here?

She swallows hard and closes the door.

Me: Are you here to finish me off?

Aza: That’s not true. I would never hurt you.

Me: Funny enough I’m the one with a cast in my fucken leg.

I hiss at her causing her to flinch.

Aza: I don’t know what came over me. I’m sorry.

Me: Inkinga yakho awungihloniphi. {Your problem is that you don’t respect me}.

She rushes to my side and hold my hand.

Aza: That’s not true.

I yank my hand off her.

Aza: I’m taking responsibility for my actions and I’ll take care of you until you’re back in health.

Me: As you should. Who did you think will take care of me?

Aza: I will take leave at work. Please forgive me.

Tears roll down her cheeks.

Me: Just because I don’t retaliate the way you don’t doesn’t make me stupid. My mother never raised a woman abuser.

Aza: (crying) I’m sorry.

Me: If it was me who did this your would be crying abuse or what is it because I’m a man?

She cast her eyes to the floor shaking her head.

Me:  If I say I will handle it I will do so at my own times. I don’t fucken need your insecurities to come out to play every time. I need you to trust me to handle my shit. I need to fucken trust me as your man, your husband to hold down my household.

She bites her quivering lip nodding. She sniffs and wipe the tears that escape her eyes.

Aza: (softly) I trust you.

Me: Do you?

She slowly nods.
Me: Don’t turn me into something I’m not because I would hate to lose you.

Aza: I’m sorry.

Me: If you don’t mind I would like to take a nap or will that also be a problem?

She gulps the tears shaking her head.

Aza: I’ll see you later.

Me: Don’t bother. Close the door on your way out.

I close my eyes and wait for her footsteps to fade and the door follows after that. When I love I love deeply but that doesn’t mean I will turn a blind eye abuse. If I don’t stop it now it will continue until she kills me. I get that she’s angry but what she did is unforgivable. I am a man and need my respect. A man in my calibre needs all the respect a wife can give and I’m starting to question myself if my decision was the right one. Was it worth losing someone who respected me over someone who doesn’t? As much as Mamello was annoying at times but she gave me that respect I needed as a man. The question still remains though. Was Azasakhe worth it?
