KAGISO
The light blinding my face wakes me up from my slumber. I shield my eyes from the sun and adjust the seat while picking up my phone with the other hand. The time reads 06:00am. I yawn and moving my head from side to side to ease the stiff neck. I can’t believe I spent a night in here but I’m desperate. Last night didn’t go well and I’m hoping I can try again today. My phone chimes causing me to shift my eyes away from the road. It’s the unknown number again.
Me: A pleasant surprise to be called by you so early in the morning, Mrs D.
Jen: She died years ago.
I chuckle.
Me: You know I thought I was dreaming but then again your call just confirmed that it was not a dream but reality.
Jen: Let’s stop with the causalities and get straight to business.
Me: Straight to the point, damn woman you’re on a mission.
Jen: I didn’t die 7 years and wake up 7 years later to be wasting people’s time.
I laugh.
Me: Where are you?
Jen: I just arrived in the city of Gold, where it all began.
Me: When?
Jen: This morning.
Me: Give me a few hours to get you a place to stay.
Jen: I hope it won’t be anywhere far. I need to be close to them.
I arch my brow.
Me: What are you suggesting?
Jen: A couple of blocks away from him.
Me: Rental or purchasing?
Jen: I don’t have money for neither of that.
Me: No, you don’t but he has.
She laughs on the end of the line.
Jen: Weren’t you suppose to be rooting for him? I expected to be hunted by him by now.
Me: I’m not a snitch.
She chuckles.
Jen: But you did snitch years ago.
I snicker.
Me: There’s a difference between the two.
Jen: How so?
Me: You wouldn’t understand.
Jen: Fine but either way I owe you my life. Thank you for saving me.
Me: It was nothing. You earned my respect and that’s what we do in our circle. We protect each other even it means protecting you from your spouse.
Jen: Thank you.
Me: It was nothing.
Jen: I need the lay out of his house. How many cameras do they have?
Me: Plenty except the bathrooms, main bedroom and the garage.
Jen: Which angle are they all facing?
Me: Let’s meet over breakfast and discuss this?
Jen: Nah, we don’t know who maybe watching.
Me: True. I’ll call the estate agent and ask for any rentals near him and we can meet over there.
Jen: Fine by me. But I’ll keep using the burner phone just in case. Don’t call me I will call you.
I throw my head back laughing.
