One Month Later
Nova Solana Carter
It's been about a month since me and Ramirah made up. I won't front, I'm feeling her real bad, but she got me deep in the friend zone, and it feels like I'm clocking overtime trying to climb out.
Right now, we're on FaceTime. I just left the gym, and she's at work, taking notes from a PowerPoint her professor posted. My little nurse bae.
"What time you get off today, mama?" I asked, and she rolled her eyes playfully, the same way she always does when I call her that.
"Solana, how long you gonna keep calling me mama? And I get off at 6:30. Last day of these 12-hour shifts. Thank God," she smiled.
"I'm calling you mama as long as you keep calling me Solana." Ever since we hung out that first night and she found out my middle name, it's been nonstop "Solana this, Solana that." I'm not complaining though—it's cute.
"You wanna come over, watch a movie tonight, and maybe go to brunch tomorrow?" I suggested.
"Yeah, that sounds good," she nodded. "Can we watch The Grinch.. It's like two weeks until Christmas, and we gotta start the countdown," she grinned, all excited.
"Whatever you want, mama. I'll see you later. Text me when you're outside and be safe," I said.
"I will. See you later, Solana," she said, ending the call.
After we hung up, I checked Instacart to see if my order was close. It said it'd be delivered soon. I figured I'd surprise her—got her some flowers and Crumbl cookies, cause I know how much she loves those.
my pretty girl - Awww thank you, Solana. I love them 🥺
you're welcome, mama. I'm glad you like them.
♡
Man, I hope I can get outta this friend zone soon. I'm ready to stop playing it safe. I never wanted to be just friends with her. From the moment I saw her, I knew exactly what type of timing I was on.
But I get it—she's focused on nursing school, and I respect that. Still, a little love wouldn't hurt, you know?
I took those thoughts with me into the shower, vibing to some Steve Lacy, trying to shake off the feelings. Afterward, I scrolled TikTok, hunting for a brunch spot. I knew it had to have French toast and Patron trees, because she's been talking about both nonstop lately. Once I found a spot, I booked a reservation and a nearby hotel for the weekend.
Just in time, too—my phone buzzed.
my pretty girl- Solana I'm outside.
I opened the door, and there she was, standing there in sweats and a hoodie, looking fine as ever. Even dressed down, she was so beautiful.
"Solana, stop staring," she laughed, playfully pushing past me.
"Girl, these my eyes!" I shot back, making her laugh even more.
"You got The Grinch on?" She was already walking towards my room, impatient as always.
"I'm fine, by the way. Thanks for asking, Ramirah," I teased.
"How was your day, Solana?" she replied, rolling her eyes.
"Boring, but fine. You eat mama?"
She nodded. "Yeah, I'm good. I had some of the Crumbl earlier. The lineup this week is so good—10/10."
