He took her to the garden that was usually at the back of the ship because she wanted to look at the roses and he had no complaints. He usually spent his time tending to flowers, anyway. Izo watched as (Name) glided from flower to flower, gaping at all the colors and spending minutes just admiring each one, coming across.
It was common knowledge that he was the type of person to observe unique people. They were so hard to find these days, especially when those he saw in one were all in the same place: tired and trying hard to survive, even though they had no clear goal. Why the children were so different from everyone else, he couldn't say, but just five minutes into (Name) had him intrigued, to say the least.
Most children might be interested in a flower garden for a short period, but about half an hour passed and this little girl was still looking at a group of freesias as she sorted out all her secrets. He couldn't understand.
"Why are you so curious about this?" he asked. - "They're just flowers. You can see them all the time."
"But they are small seeds! A flower sounds suns, they grow big and beautiful!" she exclaimed without looking up.
"However, they die even faster."
"Then I have to appreciate it more, right?" Izo hummed. A strange thought, he admitted. It's certainly not something he would expect her to say. When she finally looked away from the freesias, she approached him and sleeved his kimono.
All the brightness in his eyes disappeared then, and he had to blink a few times to see if it was just a trick, it wasn't.
"Izo-san, if I'm scared, am I a scaredy cat?" she questioned softly.
"...That depends. What are you afraid of?" (Name) looked down at her feet and clasped her hands behind her back. A few beats she spent wiggling and puffing out her lower lip, and when she looked up, (Favorite color) eyes glistened with unshed tears.
"Izo-san...I...I don't want to be a scaredy cat. But I also don't want to die. Does dying scare you?" His mouth opened, but no sound came out in his confusion, but he quickly shook it off and answered honestly.
"Death is... it's not something I would be afraid of. I've seen the times for me to start worrying. It all starts and it all ends. You can't stop it even if you tried."
Her lips quivered and her arms fell numb to her sides.
He caught her easily as she lunged for him and buried her face in his abdomen, tears leaking freely and wetting his kimono.
"Dr. Kureha is really nice. She says it's scary, but I don't want to be. She was sad when she smiled at me... smiles aren't sad. They're not! But mom and dad... we we are one...one..." Izo's brow furrowed.
"Why were you at the doctor? Are you sick?"
The tears ran faster down her face as she sobbed.
"Don't tell anyone, Izo-san. Anyone who hears it gets sad. I don't want to be sad." Something small and winding coiled in the depths of his heart, but he pushed it aside and put a caring face on his face.
"I promise." It was a promise he wished he hadn't made.
