We had our dinner at the party, where the older women of the group are still fascinated with fabricating stories of our possible future should a Montecarlo-Rodriguez merging push through by marriage. Dad is not pleased with the topic and tito Raymond is mocking him about it. My lips are sealed as I cannot give any comment that might fuel the fire of that conversation. Amiel is also mum about it whenever the women on the table asked him but I can see him staring at my way from time to time. The fact that Anton's menacing stare is melting me to my seat, lalo akong nawalan ng imik at hilaw nalang na ngumingisi at umiiling sa mga echoserang matatanda na to na akala mo fortune teller.
"That's enough, Mariche. Hayaan na natin ang kabataan sa ganyan." Mr. Enriquez called out his wife and for his wife's elite friends to stop when he felt that my dad's last response has strong disapproval in it. Finally!
Our client is kind enough to divert the topic back into business where the older men dominated the table.
"No alcohol." Dad whispered beside me while in the middle of their conversation.
My eyes wandered at the people on the table where I met Amiel's eyes locked to me as if I'm a shooting target. I inhaled and tore my eyes off him, kung saan si Anton naman ang nahuli ko ng lumingon ako sa ibang parte.
My cheeks heated as I know what Anton is probably looking at when his eyes darted on the side of my face. I remember choosing Anton's earrings to wear for tonight's event.
His brow shot up. I want to smile at him but he already evaded my eyes and stare at his wine glass. I sighed.
Sungit. I smirked internally.
It was a successful yet tiring night for us. Dad is still occupied by the client so I took a quick powder room break.
"Ahm.." I was startled I didn't know what to say. I look around and saw dad still busy talking to the same old businessmen.
"I'm sorry... for coming up to you this way. Are you.. uncomfortable?" He carefully asked.
I cleared my throat and shook my head. "Ahm.. No. It's fine. What's up?"
He stared at me for a almost a minute so I had to bite my lower lip and wandered my eyes around not to feel such awkwardness.
I then heard him sighed. He licked his lips and took a few steps forward. I inhaled deeply, trying to anticipate what he has to say.
"I just want to.. I mean.. we never had the chance to.. talk.. about us." He said lowly.
Kununot ang noo at napapilig sa narinig. He.. wants to talk.. about us?
I heard him sigh again. "If you'll allow me, I want to have a chance.. to talk about us. Our-"
"Ma'am, pasensya na po pero nagaaya na si sir umuwi." Putol samin ni Matt na biglang sumulpot lang sa gilid namin. I blinked and glanced at dad's direction where I met his menacing stare, or his eyes at Amiel in front of me.
I sighed. I look at Amiel, thinking he would be annoyed at Matt, as he usually is, is now calm and nodding.
I saw him smile but it was short-lived. "It's okay. You go ahead. We'll see each other at school. Good night, Ria."
My lips parted at this Amiel in front of me. I swallowed hard and smiled back. "G-Goodnight, Amiel."
