Hazel felt stifled in the hot, stuffy courtroom. Everyone in the room was dressed in their best clothes, their postures perfect, and their expressions ranging from grim to blank.
Harry looked out of place among the high-and-mighty as he fidgeted in his seat, his eyes darting around the room. Oh, Harry. Hazel felt her heart break every time she thought of the poor boy. He had to live in a bad condition due to the prophecy, he felt out of place, and he felt unloved.
No child should feel that way.
The man who sat at the head of the court banged his gavel. Ah. So this was Cornelius Oswald Fudge. The Minister of Magic was a short, portly man with a double chin and reading glasses.
Truly magnificent.
Jason, who was sitting beside her, snorted. 'You need to stop broadcasting, Hazel. You've become better at reading emotions; you have to get better at hiding them. I do agree with your assessment of him, though.'
Hazel was lucky to have found a family like the one she had. A family where everyone supported her, took care of her and loved her.
'Order!' Fudge said. 'We are here to judge the fate of Harry James Potter, who has breached the Degree for Restriction of Underaged Sorcery.'
'Oh, my gods,' Thalia said. 'He's being so dramatic about this.'
Dudge-sorry, Fudge- continued: 'The hearing is taking place in the presence of the entire Wizanagamot, which shall be the prosecuting party headed by me and Dolores Jane Umbridge. The defendant is Harry James Potter and the chief witness is-'
With the drama to match the King of the Gods himself, the doors to the courtroom flew open. The first thing Hazel could see was the long, flowing silver beard. Then came the crooked nose, the moon-glasses, and the twinkling smile.
'Albus Perciveral Wulfric Brian Dumbledore.'
Fudge's face flushed. 'Ah, yes. Of course. My assistant Percy Weasely shall be taking the minutes of this hearing.'
Interesting. A Weasely sibling on the Ministry's side? This was not going to go well.
'Acting as impartial mediators are the Princes and Princesses of the Royal Family of Olympia: Prince Perseus Jackson, Prince Jason Grace, Prince Nico Di Angelo, Princess Thalia Grace, Princess Hazel Levesque, and Marquis William Andrew Solace,' Fudge said.
'It is an honor to have you here, Your Majesties,' said a regal woman whom Hazel took to be Amelia Bones.
Hazel sighed internally. They had to deal with gods know how long of more of this.
'It is an honor to be here, Madam Bones,' Percy said. 'Now, let us get this hearing underway.'
'Certainly. The charges against the accused are: breaking not only the Decree against Underage Sorcery but the Statue of Secrecy also by summoning the Patronus charm in front of a muggle,' Fudge said.
Madam Bones took off her monocle. 'A Patronus, you say? Impressive for one so young.'
'It doesn't matter how impressive the magic was! What matters it that he broke two laws,' Fudge said.
Much bantering took place over this point in the Wizenagamot but by the end of it, most of the members looked quite ready to hang Harry.
'As I was saying-'
'I did it in self-defense!' Harry said.
Each head in the room snapped toward Harry. 'Could you please repeat what you said, Mr. Potter?' Umbridge said.
Hazel seriously hated Umbridge now. If the constant coughing, the pink cardigan, and the ego the size of Olympus didn't spawn an immense hatred for the witch, her petulant behavior certainly did.
'I said, I did it in self-defense. There were these Dementors and-'
Fudge laughed. 'Oh, Dementors, now? Come on, let us hear what cock-and-bull this boy has come up with this time, and how this fool of a headmaster defends it.'
'You would do well to hold your tongue, Mr. Fudge. You are breaking courtroom decorum,' Hazel said, her voice cool. She may not have been the biggest fan of Dumbledore, but she wouldn't allow this level of bullshit.
'I admit I overstepped, Lady Hazel. But this man has protected Harry for too long, despite serious allegations against him.'
'Allegations that you pardoned, Cornelius,' Dumbledore said. 'I would say you broke a few laws doing so.'
'Laws are meant to be broken!'
'My, Cornelius, I had not expected such hypocrisy from you. Here we are, with you having called a hearing of the entire Wizanagamot for a simple matter of underaged wizardry.'
Fudge spluttered, and Hazel enjoyed the flustered look on his face. She could feel the change in the air: the Wizenagamot was changing its mind slowly, one member at a time.
'But Dementors?' Umbridge said. 'All dementors are under firm Ministry control. There is no way that a Dementor would rebel, and somehow find its way to Little Winghing, Surrey.'
Hazel's blood boiled. This absolute utter bi-
'That bitch,' Will said. 'Excuse me, wizards of the Wizenagamot, is the knowledge of this decree common?'
'Yes,' Amelia said.
'So Harry knows about it?'
Hazel grinned. Well played, Will. Well played. Will was going to trap the prosecutors in their own words.
'If Harry knew of it,' Will said. 'Then he full well also knew that he might get expelled. So with everything to lose and nothing to lose, why would he break the law?'
'Because he has always been an attention-seeking brat,' Fudge. 'There are many incidents I can bring up, the main one is the story of the return of He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named.'
A cold air settled over the room. The entire Wizenagamot seemed to have taken a deep breath and was waiting. Waiting for the next word. The word that would decide the course of this hearing.
'What if it was one of us saying that Lord Voldemort was back?' Jason said. 'Would you believe us then?'
Jason had caught them off guard. With no reply coming from the head bench, Nico pressed it forward.
'So you would have been alright with us saying it because you have a personal vendetta against both Dumbledore and Harry which led to a breach of trust, which led us to this?'
Thalia laughed. 'Oh, how the mighty have fallen. Such corruption, such corruption. I thought our family was bad, but this is so much worse. A trial is supposed to give everyone a fair chance. This trial, when it began, had more of a chance of going in Harry's favor than I had of living all those years ago.'
'I agree with my cousin. I would be hard-pressed not to criticize this bench, but she's done it for me,' Percy said.
Amelia Bones raised her hand. 'All in favor of clearing the accused of all charges, both previous and recent?'
The assembled wizards raised their hands in unison.
Fudge banged his gavel again, his face looking as if he had eaten something bad. 'The accused is clear of all charges. Dismissed.'
