It was uncommon for Rose to feel unsure about something.
Most of the time things were clear and simple around her, rare as that was given her heritage and the duties such bonds by blood demanded of her as heir to the crown of her father. But the reasons to that were simple.
People tended to her, took decisions for her, she was meant to follow instructions and follow what she had been taught by her teachers just like a proper lady should. When she had to choose..they were still simple matters.
Which didn't help her now to deal with what was bothering her.
She sighed, rubbing the back of her head.
She should have known better, as a princess...and as someone that had gone through a terrible experience not to meddle and stick her her hands in what should have been painful memories.
Even if she suspected something. That there was an inkling of truth in her suspicions...that did not absolve her from what damage her words could do.
...
Everything had been going fine, until she made that question. Why did she? Why couldn't she just leave it be?
Her delicate features furrowed into a deep frown, marring her childish like looks.
She knew why.
She had been trying to help..., without knowing how to in the first place. Her good intentions became wasted and became painful to the ones she sought to help.
Something she vowed she would never do again.
Now, though it pained her to see that she could not take those words back..she knew that it would do her any good to just wallow in self pity.
So she had come up with a plan to fix what she had damaged in her ignorance.
Well, perhaps a plan or a scheme would have been quite the stretch to call what she had devised, but in her mind it felt like a full proof plan.
Given the fact that she could not offer her friends what she usually could if she was back home, she could at least try to share with them something that she had come to enjoy through her free time in the palaces gardens.
Looking down at her hands, covered in dirt as they were she could not help but beam in joy at the pair of wreaths she held between her fingers.
Flowers of all kind of shapes and colours could be seen under the kind beaming moonlight, wrapped tightly together in a neat and beautiful crown like appearance she had woven with patience and love.
Her smile grew a little more larger as the aroma of fresh roses, softly melting in between the scent of reached her.
This was one thing that she had not been taught by her teachers. It was something they in fact considered beneath their attention.
But she had always been friends with the gardeners, Mr Loid had always been too kind and gentle with her. Always an unending beam of light and smiles instead of the fearful or awkward stares other servants sent her way when they thought she was not looking, for they did not know whether they should break character or just remain stoically in their duties.
That was perhaps why the memory of the venerable old man shone brighter than any other servant of her home for he had not treated her erecting a barrier between them, she had just accepted her curiosity as if she was his own kin.
She remembered those days she spent in the old mans company when her lessons were over, or just waking up hours before the damn so that she would not have to be seen running again through the corridors to get to them in time.
Teaching her about the difference of flowers, plants or the texture of each of their leafs when under her thumb. Yet also a myriad of things that she could do with them. How they tasted, what herbs were good for ones own health and how they needed to be treated so that they could grow strong.
Compared with dancing and singing, gardening may have been a rather crude and dirty task with the way the soil clung to her fingers..., but looking at the results of her first attempt she could not help but relish on it.
She leaned her head back, her golden eyes looking up, becoming lost as they stared at the moon that shined brightly above her head. Its bright, silver hue glowing with enough strength to show the skies empty of any clouds, leaving only the ample mantle of stars to welcome her instead.
Alpha and Koldarrd had done so much for her...
It was about time she did something for them instead. Little thing as it was, it was better than nothing. A thought that had been born in her desire to not become a burden for them..
Even though she knew, that deep down they would never consider her as such. That thought made her smile again. Granting her new strength to her resolve as she counted the minutes before her friends arrival.
It however did not kill that little voice at the back of her head telling her that she was building castles from thin air again.
She sighed, this time a little more loudly as she held a hand to her chest. Feeling the soft, humming of her heartbeat against it.
She only hoped that these gifts would be enough to dispel whatever pain she may had caused..., and if they did not. Then perhaps they were enough to mend the wound and allow her to start again.
Though given Koldarrds demeanour, it was more probable than not that he would have let bygones be bygones. Alpha however...
''No, right now its not the time to think that Rose. Think positively! Its going to end well..''
She chastised herself, shaking her head energetically while at it. It was not long before she regained her composure.
Besides, why was she dreading about something like this? This was a moment that she should be looking forward.
Friends stood for each other. They laughed, they played and even quarrelled about things. And if life was anything like the books she had read before, friendship was far more sturdier for it to die it like this.
That seemed to satisfy her and placate whatever grim thought would try to squirm their way in.
Yeah..
That was about right
She only had to wait for their return.
And soon enough she heard something not far away from her location. Indicating that she was no longer alone in the village..
It was not the occasional humming of the wind that seemed all too keen to echo more often than not with strange sounds, though it could have been just the way the sound sounded once it went through the broken windows of the houses around her. Nor the trails left behind by a cat jumping from rooftop to rooftop.
No, this time it was something different. like the rummaging of things.
With her heartbeat quickening at the prospect of seeing her friends again, she ran towards the origin of the sound, humming happily all the while. The words of caution that Koldarrd had shared with her before their departure to wait instead of looking around for them ignored by the weight of cheerful mood.
...
...
Little did she knew that her enthusiasm was gonna be rather short lived
