A Second Chance

Chapter 15

Rory and Logan spent a few weeks processing the news that they were having triplets before they decided that it was time to tell Matthew.

One Thursday in April, when Rory was almost 13 weeks pregnant, Rory sat Matthew down to talk to him. "You know how your friend Will has a little brother and a baby sister?"

Matthew nodded. "I think that we should also have a baby in our house because then when he got bigger I could play with him, so we should also have a baby at our house"

Hearing Matthew say that was a huge relief. Matthew had been an only child for 5 and a half years, so she'd been worried that he might react negatively to her having another baby. "What if I told you that we are?"

"We're gonna have a baby in our house?" Matthew asked excitedly.

"Matthew, we're gonna have 3 babies in our house" Rory told him.

"They're all in your tummy?" Matthew asked

"Yeah, and for the next few months they're gonna grow a whole lot, and then when they're big enough they'll come out" Rory said. Since finding out that they were having triplets they'd also learned that triplets are usually born at 32 weeks instead of 40, and that they were usually born by C-section.

"Are they boy babies or girl babies?" Matthew asked

"We don't know yet" Rory told him. She had an ultrasound appointment coming up but she wasn't sure they'd be able to find out then. It was still early. "They could all be boys, or they could all be girls, or we could get a mix of both"

"I think it should be one boy and two girls" Matthew said

"Why do you think that?" Rory asked.

"Because I'm a boy so if there's one boy and two girls then we'll have 2 boys and 2 girls, and also you're a girl and Logan is a boy so we'll have 3 boys and 3 girls"

Rory was a little surprised that Matthew thought of that on his own. "That would be pretty cool, but we don't get to pick"

"Who does get to pick?

"Nobody gets to pick. As the babies grow they'll either turn into boys or turn into girls"

"It will be funny if all of the babies turn into boys because then you'll the only girl and there will a lot of boys"

"Right"

The next day, Rory, Logan, and Matthew went to Friday night dinner at the Gilmore's. They decided that they would start telling people that Rory was pregnant, but they wouldn't say anything yet about the triplets. They'd also made sure Matthew knew that he couldn't say either. He took that to mean he shouldn't talk and of course everyone noticed that something was up.

"Matthew, why are you being so quiet?" Lorelai asked. Matthew just looked at Rory.

"He's trying really hard to keep a secret" Rory said. "Aren't you?"

Matthew nodded.

"What's the secret?" Richard asked

"Yeah, I'm curious" Lorelai said.

"Well, come September, Matthew's gonna be a big brother" Rory said.

"Oh, my God, yay!" Lorelai said and got up to hug Rory. This was followed by congratulations from everyone else.

The next day, Rory had lunch with Lane and Paris, and she decided to tell them that she was pregnant.

"I'm throwing you a baby shower" Lane said. "Ooh! And that thing where you pop a balloon to reveal what you're having"
