The first Sunday in September, Rory and Logan found themselves getting ready for Rory's ultrasound appointment.

"Where are you going?" Matthew asked.

"We have an appointment but grandma's gonna come watch you guys" Rory said.

A few minutes later Lorelai arrived.

"Alright, so the babies are napping and they should be asleep for another hour or so. They need lunch when they wake up, there's salmon and spaghetti in the fridge and I promised Matthew ice cream after lunch" Rory said. "Also Cody's in the backyard, so just make sure the door gets closed when he comes in"

"When do I get to know what this secret errand is?" Lorelai asked.

"Soon" Rory said.

An hour later, she was sitting in the clinic getting an ultrasound done.

"Is there a problem?" Logan asked, noticing the doctor looked nervous.

"No" she said. "I'm sorry. I'm new at this, I'm a resident, and I'm just having a little trouble with the machine so I'm gonna call the doctor in"

"Ok" Rory nodded.

The resident left and came back with Rory's regular OB/GYN. "Hi, Rory. How are you feeling?"

"Fine" Rory said. "Still a little surprised that I let this happen"

Dr Lee chuckled softly. "Let's see if we can't get this ultrasound to work" she said and squeezed the gel onto Rory's stomach. "So when you were here a few weeks ago we didn't do an ultrasound but I estimated that you'd be about 5 weeks along so you should be about 8 weeks along now, but we'll be able to get a better estimate with the ultrasound"

"Ok"

Several minutes went by and the doctor was quiet. She wiped the gel off Rory's stomach and whispered something to the resident before moving to sit across from Rory.

"Don't say it" Rory said with tears in her eyes.

"I'm sorry" Dr Lee said. "It looks like you were about 7 or 8 weeks pregnant but there's no heartbeat"

Rory sniffled and wiped away the tears that were falling down her face. "I know I shouldn't be this upset about a baby that I didn't even want in the first place"

Logan rubbed her shoulders. "You're allowed to be upset, Ace"

"Rory, the fetus is not viable but your body doesn't recognize that. There's still tissue from the pregnancy in your uterus that needs to be removed. In my opinion your best option is medication. I'll send you home with a prescription for misoprostol. It's 4 pills. Put all four under your tongue for 30 minutes and then swallow whatever's left of the pills with water. A few hours after you take the misoprostol, you'll experience some cramping and bleeding, like a very heavy period. It'll last a few days and then it'll be over"

"The alternative?" Rory asked.

"A D&C. Do you know what that is?"

"Yeah" Rory nodded. "Yeah, I'll uh...I'll take the pills"

"Ok"

When they got home the kids were sitting in the kitchen, eating ice cream with Lorelai.

"Mama! Mama!" Ryan reached for Rory.

"Hi baby" Rory kissed the top of his head.

"You ok?" Lorelai asked.

"Fine" Rory said.

"Rory"

"I'm fine" Rory said. She kissed Noah's cheek and then Julie's before moving to stand behind Matthew. She ran her hands through his hair.
