"I'm telling you guys, it was Humdinger!" Chase said. He had finally returned to the Lookout. The pups were all lounging outside. Marshall was with Katie, helping treat Ryder. "At least, it smelled like him."
"That's impossible," Skye said. "He's in jail."
"Besides," Rocky said. "How could he find us? We're on an island!"
"My nose never lies, that was Humdinger's scent." Chase had been pacing the entire time. "But why was he here? Where did he go?"
"Did you smell anything else at Mr. Porter's?" Zuma asked.
"Other than his food, no." Chase sighed and started walking out the doors. "I'm going for a walk." The other pups just nodded, knowing Chase needed time to collect his thoughts.
As soon as the German shepherd was outside, he turned on his communicator. "Marshall, is he alright?" Chase asked as he ran towards Katie's.
"Katie said he's got a concussion, so I was right about that. But, there is something else. Can you come-"
"Already... here..." Chase said as he stood in the doorway.
"Wow, Chase," Katie said, sliding a water bowl towards him. "Did you run the whole way here?"
Chase nodded and quickly lapped up the water. "You said there was something else? Is something wrong with Ryder?"
"Well," Katie said, pulling out a plastic bag. "These look like fragments of wood. Maybe from-"
"A baseball bat?" Chase asked.
A look of shock fell on Katie's face. "How did you-"
"I found one at Mr. Porter's covered in Humdinger's scent." Katie gasped.
"But Humdinger's in jail?" Marshall said nervously.
"I know what I smelled. It was his scent. I don't know how to explain it, but somehow, Humdinger was here." He turned towards Katie. "Is something wrong with Ryder?"
"Sometimes, with concussions, there can be some... complications."
Chase tilted his head. "What are 'complications'?" he said, letting the word roll off his tongue.
"Well-" Katie began.
Chase sniffed the air for a second before running towards the back. "He's waking up!" Katie and Marshall looked to each other before chasing after him. Chase jumped for the handle, pulling it down with a paw and opening the door. He hopped up onto the bed, watching as Ryder shifted uncomfortably. "Ryder?" At the same time, Katie and Marshall walked in.
"Chase, there's something you should-" Kate started saying, but Marshall touched her hand before she could finish.
"Let him figure it out on his own," he whispered.
Chase didn't pay any attention to them as he watched Ryder. Ryder slowly opened his big brown eyes, meeting Chase's equally, if not lighter, brown eyes. "Wh-where am I?"
"Ryder!" Chase barked, licking his friend. Ryder stiffened and pushed the pup away. "Ryder?"
"Who's Ryder? Who are you?" Ryder asked. Chase looked at him with his head tilted.
"Chase, I need to check his vitals," Katie said, placing the confused pup on the ground. "Marshall, could you explain to Chase what's happening."
"Who are you?" Ryder asked. "Who's Marshall and Chase?"
Chase's tail went from wagging to completely limp and between his legs. His ears were pinned back. "W-what do you mean? Ryder, it's me! Chase!"
"Chase, come on," Marshall said, dragging him by his collar.
