World meets Maya

{8} Are you scared of mommy?

I'm sitting with Zay at our favourite pizza place, I used to come here as a kid all the time to escape from the house and the loneliness but now I come here all the time with Zay.

He has sauce all over his face like usual but I only plan on telling him at the end cause whenever it wipes off it's on his face all over again. Like a child.

The air is kind of tense as he looks scared and it makes me scared for what he's holding back from telling me.

He's been shifting in his seat and not inhaling the pizza like he usually does, so I did what everyone would naturally do. Kick his leg so hard that he keels over on his side of the booth.

"WhAt the hell Maya?" He's still holding his leg by the time he sits up straight. Sal, the owner of the place, is laughing at the scene as he flips pizza dough in the air.

"You're holding in a question and you look like you're gonna shit yourself" I say nonchalantly and take another bite of pizza to ease my stress. God I love meat feast pizza. I yell this to Sal and he throws a thumbs up at us. I smile back at him.

"Funny how you've seen him more than your dad" Zay says in return for me kicking his leg. I slowly build a death glare for him before he starts apologising.

I let it go and he sighs. "Okay Maya it's tough". I get nervous for a second.
Does he know about my feelings for Lucas? Is he okay? Oh my gosh is he going to die??

"Will you ask Riley to book the summer cabin again?"

I stare at him for a long time and then kick his leg again. "That was why you're looking all stupid for??" I say as he's clutches his leg so hard he nearly falls off the seat. "Why would you be scared to tell me that"

"I don't know because you and Riley aren't normal right now?"

That's a lie, Riley and I are so normal right now. I think. "Stop lying" I pressure him.

"I'm not!" he claims as his eyes shift around. I realise instantly what's happening.

"You have a secret mission don't you?? That's why you're all nervous" I say, smiling when his shoulders slump and he sighs dramatically. "Maya always knows what's up. Now tell me what the mission is" I say in third person.

"Uhhh the mission is for me and Smackle" He says all rushed and panicky.

I stop for a minute "You like Smackle? oh wow, Zay I didn't even know. Wait what about Farkle? Is this why you been talking to her more?"

"Oh yes, yes and in fact i'm gonna clear the air with him today. Actually I think Smackle might just be doing that right now!" He laughs weirdly and I feel a little suspicious. He stops laughing when he sees my expression and sighs dramatically again. "You see Maya dearest, I'm in love with Isadora Smackle"

My heart warms for him slightly but I'm also worried about how Farkle is taking the news right now. "Okay...but I don't know why you can't ask Riley yourself about the cabin. Are you scared of her or something"

"Well- I mean" He thinks hard for a minute "Well yeah I guess I can ask her myself but you're her- "

"Awww is Zay-Zay scared to ask his mommy to go out this summer" I say in a teasing voice and his face scrunches up.

"What? no stop being weird. IM NOT SCARED." He yells putting his arms around himself.

"It's okay Zay, daddy here will talk to mommy for you"

He gives me a blank stare "You are so weird.." the rest of his sentence is muttered but I hear the word Lucas and the word 'you' in there.

I ask him what he's muttering before he stands up abruptly and spits out the words "let's go talk to mommy"

Okay yeah I get why he thinks i'm weird
