The sound of birds chirping in the town below roused you from your sleep. The early morning sun was just barely visible in the sky, which casted beautiful pink and orange rays over the rooftops of Trost. You let out a yawn and stretched, your muscles stiff from the awkward position you'd dozed off in.
Levi was still sitting beside you, but the Captain's eyes were closed and his breathing was slow. He had fallen asleep facing you, resting his head in his hand. That's gotta be uncomfortable, you cringed. But he seemed too content in his slumber for you to wake him up. And whether by design or accident, he was also shielding you from the worst of the morning breeze.
You leaned back down, and shifted your body closer to him to bask in the warmth he provided. You began to drift off back into sleep for a little longer, until you heard the sound of footsteps drawing nearer. Immediately, you shot back up.
Shit. The expedition is today.
You peered over the ridge of the wall you were hiding behind to look at the commotion. A small group of about three or four Garrison soldiers were making their morning rounds, and were headed your way.
They hadn't spotted you yet. But if you and Levi didn't move soon, you'd have a hell of a time explaining why the two of you had spent the night sleeping up here together. You doubted "just enjoying the view" would go over well.
"Levi." You whispered, nudging him, but you received no response. "Levi!" You repeated, more forcefully this time, giving his leg a sharp nudge with your boot.
He jolted awake and shot you a quizzical glance, looking as though he wasn't quite sure what century it was. "Good morning, sleeping beauty," you whispered, flashing a sheepish smile. "Lovely of you to join us... but we have company."
You gestured over the edge of the wall toward the approaching soldiers.
His eyes widened, realizing the situation. Without saying a word, he ducked and scooped you up again, pulling his jacket over your face so as not to be seen by the soldiers as he jumped off the wall.
As you shot off, you heard the soldiers shout after you, but Levi was quick to outmaneuver them and landed to the ground silently.
"That was close," you said breathlessly with a laugh.
"Yeah. Didn't realize it was morning already, sorry."
You both stood there for a moment in quiet- the weird kind that made your skin crawl a little. The buzz of adrenaline was gone now, and all that was left was the jarring reality that you had just spent the night next to Levi. Literally. Sleeping.
"Well... uh," you rubbed the back of your neck, "I should probably get ready. The mission and all."
He nodded, "Right. I forgot. I'm...sorry." The awkwardness in the air between you two was so thick, you could cut it with a knife.
