"Sabrina..."
I woke with a start as I heard his cry. My head felt heavy with sleep, but as soon as my name left his lips, I was alert. After I had fallen asleep on the car ride to the airport, Max had carried me to the jet. We talked for a while before we both fell asleep.
I turned on the light above my seat so I could see him better. He was lying across the seat across from me, a fluffy blanket wrapped tightly around him. His face was screwed up, and I could see beads of sweat forming on his forehead. I frowned, worry sparking in my chest.
"No, please..." His voice was muffled and hoarse. I could see him trembling slightly under the thick blanket, but not from the cold.
I knew in that moment that he was having a nightmare. Well, the same knightmare he had been having since... the crash. I shivered at even the thought of it. I tried to block it out of my memory as best I could, but I also still had nightmares about it.
"No, SABRINA!" He jolted awake with a panicked yell. I blinked in surprise as I saw the terror in his eyes. A wave of pity washed over me. He was shaking hard, his eyes wide.
"Hey, hey, it's okay..." I told him tentatively, leaning forward. I could see the tears froming in his eyes even before they began to slide down his cheeks.
"Maxie..." His chest shook with a small sob as I whispered his name. I let my eyes soften. Without another word, he tossed aside the blanket and got to his feet. I smiled softly as he came over to me.
"It's okay, I'm here." I murmured softly as he stopped in front of me. I looked up at him, trying to keep my expression calm.
He dropped to his knees before me, his legs clearly not strong enough to hold him up. I watched him, love and pity swelling inside me. He nudged my legs apart and placed his body between them. I just wanted to kiss him, hold him tight, and never let go. He looked up at me through his eyeslashes, his gorgeus blue eyes shining with tears. My heart melted.
"Make them stop... Please, I can't do this anymore." His voice broke. It broke my heart.
"I'm sorry. I'm so sorry, baby. I can't..." I ran my hands over his on my knees. He pressed his face into my chest, his hands winding around my back to hold me tightly. He held me as if he were scared that if he let me go, I would disappear.
My hands found their place over his shoulders, my fingers running down under his shirt to trace comforting circles on his back. His muscles were taught and hard beneath my fingertips. My other hand ran up the back of his neck, stroking and playing gently with his hair. His body shuddered with a half-sob.
I could feel his tears soaking into my own shirt, and my heart wrenched. I had only seen him cry a few times, but it still shook me to my core. In my eyes, he was always so strong and so good at controlling his emotions. Seeing him like this, broken, hurt me.
"Don't leave." He whispered when his breath began to slow, his voice muffled slightly by my chest but clear enough for me to hear. His voice was quiet, but the emotion in his words was raw.
"What?" I frowned. He pulled back so that he could look at me, his eyes swirling like a blue whirlpool of emotion. My breath hitched in my throat at the sight of him.
"Never leave me." He repeated, his grip on me tightening slightly as he spoke. I let myself soften. His words hung in the air like a desperate plea.
"I'm not going anywhere, Max." I cupped his face in my hands gently.
