Sabrina's POV

Normally, I always know what to say.

Some people will tell you that I don't shut up sometimes. The point is, I'm never at a loss for words.

But as I looked at Max, on one knee before me, a small box clutched in his hand, I couldn't form a single coherent thought. I didn't trust myself to speak.

The letter was burning into my hand as I clutched tightly. I looked down at Max, his expression one of such love and hope. His eyes held me captive, making it impossible for me to look away.

"Sabrina..."

"I have loved you desperately and selfishly since the moment I felt your touch. You are the best thing I never planned. Loving you... is like breathing. The most natural thing in the world."

I was shaking.

His hand slipped into mine. The warmth of his touch sent a wave of heat coursing through my veins, making it impossible for me to breathe.

"My heart is so full of you, I can hardly call it my own. It beats for you, it aches for you. You came into my life, and then became it. Because it's you, Sabrina. It's always been you.

"Constantly, continually, consistently, you."

I can't breathe.

"Darling, you are all I ever wanted love to be. So, I beg you, I plead with you, marry me. Be mine. Let me be yours."

His words, his voice, it was all so beautiful, so perfect.

It was like he had written the words straight from his heart into mine. I couldn't help but feel my eyes begin to sting with tears as I looked down at him, my chest aching.

"Max," I whispered, my voice barely audible over the thunder of my heart. My hand trembled in his, and I felt a tear slip down my cheek. His shoulders dropped a little.

"I know that voice." He looked up at me, his eyes searching mine for something. "Just say it. You won't hurt me."

"Max, I can't marry you..." My voice broke.

His eyes closed for a moment, before he got to his feet. I swallowed hard as he looked over me, but his eyes were not angry or hurt.

"Why?" was all he said.

"You know why..." I couldn't meet his gaze.

His eyes were still on mine, but they seemed to be seeing right through me. "You're afraid," he said softly, and I couldn't deny it. "You should never be afraid when you're with me, Sabrina. Never."

I shivered.

"I'm not afraid of marriage. I afraid for you." I tried to find the right words to explain myself to him.

"I love you more than anything, but I can't do that to you. I can't watch you love me and lose me all over again."

His expression softened then, and he took a step closer. "Sabrina, I don't care how long we have together. I would take every second of it, no matter how short."

I bit my tongue.

"Look at me."

His voice was soft but firm, and I couldn't help but obey. I met his gaze, feeling the weight of his stare. "I won't give up. No matter how many times we're torn apart, I will find a way to be with you. I will always fight. For you... for us."
